Lubbock Independent School District was established in 1907. Accredited by the Texas Education Agency, Lubbock ISD is the largest school district that serves the city of Lubbock, Texas (USA). Estacado Early College High School is a 4A public high school serving grades 9 through 12 in Lubbock, Texas, (USA). It is part of the Lubbock Independent School District. Estacado is a magnet school, with programs in medicine, law and criminal justice, engineering, and JROTC. As of August 2016, Estacado High School became Estacade Early College High School, due to the partnership with Texas Tech University. Coronado High School (Lubbock, Texas)
Coronado High School is the second newest high school in the Lubbock Independent School District. Coronado, named for the Spanish conquistador and explorer Francisco Vásquez de Coronado, opened its doors in 1965 as the fourth high school in Lubbock, joining the list of Lubbock High, Monterey High and Dunbar High. Estacado was built two years after Coronado opened, in 1967. The mascot of the school is the Mustang and the school colors are Scarlet and Old Gold. Monterey High School is a 5A high school located in central Lubbock, Texas, United States (Monterey High School became a 6A school at the beginning of the 2014–2015 academic year per the UIL realignment announcement of February 2012). Monterey is part of the Lubbock Independent School District. Established in 1955, Monterey was the third high school to be established in Lubbock, after Lubbock High School and Dunbar High School. Dunbar was later changed to a Junior High. The current city of Lubbock started from the merger of two separate communities, Old Lubbock and Monterey. In a compromise move, the residents of Old Lubbock relocated to Monterey but renamed the new community Lubbock; the high school name is in remembrance to Lubbock's past.
