Laura is a traditionally feminine given name in Europe and the Americas, of Latin origin, whose meaning ("bay laurel") is a metonym for a victor, and an early hypocorism from Laurel and Lauren. Origin and usage The name Laura is the feminized form of ''laurus'', Latin for "bay laurel plant", which in the Greco-Roman era was used as a symbol of victory, honor or fame. The name represents the embodiment of victory and strength. The name ''Daphne'', derived from Ancient Greek, carries the same meaning. Popularity In British North America, it is very likely that the name Laura was extremely popular for female newborns until its rapid decline starting in the late 19th century. The name Laura was among the top 40 names for female newborns for much of the late 19th century in the United States until it dropped off the chart in 1899 at #43. The overall highest known rank for the name Laura in the 19th century was #17 in the years 1880 and 1882 with the male name Samuel. Running up, ...

Laure (art Model)
Laure was an art model in France known for her work with artist Édouard Manet. She is best known for posing as the black maid offering the white nude figure a bouquet of flowers in Manet's 1863 painting ''Olympia''. Biography Little is known about Laure. She has been described as African or Caribbean, her last name is unknown. Art historian Griselda Pollock suggested that she met the artist Édouard Manet while working as a nursemaid in the Tuileries Garden in Paris. Another theory suggests that Jeanne Duval, who was in a relationship with Manet's friend Charles Baudelaire, introduced Manet and Laure. This theory was discussed by Pollock, as well as by Manet archivist Achille Tabarant.Murrell, D. M. (2014). ''Seeing laure: Race and modernity from manet's "olympia" to matisse, bearden and beyond'' (Order No. 3607666). Available from ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global. (1493902185). Colette Peignot
Colette Peignot (October 8, 1903 – November 7, 1938) was a French writer and poet. She is most known by the pseudonym ''Laure'', but also wrote under the name ''Claude Araxe''. Profile Peignot was profoundly affected during her childhood by the deaths of her father and three uncles during World War I, by her failing health (tuberculosis nearly killed her at age 13), and by sexual abuse from a priest. Her writings are full of fury, improprieties, and suffering. Highly implicated in the early communist movement, she used her life as a tool of emancipation. Her affairs with prominent intellectuals such as Jean Bernier, Eduard Trautner, Boris Pilnyak, Boris Souvarine, George Bataille, were for her as important as affective encounters, than as weapons against her condition of woman, ''bourgeoise'', ill and colonialist. She spent all the money she inherited from her father in supporting political journals and reviews such as ''Critique sociale''. At the end of her life, she was ...
