Lamar County () is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas, in the Northeast Texas region. As of the 2020 census, its population was 50,088. Its county seat is Paris. The county was formed by the Congress of the Republic of Texas on December 17, 1840, and organized the next year. It is named for Mirabeau Buonaparte Lamar, the second president of the Republic of Texas. Lamar County comprises the Paris, TX micropolitan statistical area. Mirabeau Buonaparte Lamar
Mirabeau Buonaparte Lamar (August 16, 1798 – December 25, 1859) was an Lawyer, attorney born in Georgia, who became a Texas politician, poet, diplomat, and soldier. He was a leading Texas political figure during the Republic of Texas, Texas Republic era. He was elected as the second President of the Republic of Texas after Sam Houston. He was known for waging war against bands of Cherokee and Comanche peoples to push them out of Texas, and for establishing a fund to support public education. Early life Lamar was born in 1798 in Louisville, Georgia, and grew up at Fairfield, his father's cotton Plantations in the American South, plantation near Milledgeville, Georgia, Milledgeville, then the state capital. Texas State Highway 24
State Highway 24 (SH 24) runs from Campbell to Paris in north Texas. It is a portion of the main route, along with Interstate 30, from Paris to the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. History On June 21, 1917, SH 24 was designated from Denton to Whitesboro. The historic routing of SH 24 was one of the 25 original Texas state highways. On August 21, 1923, the routing had changed substantially. The original Denton to Whitesboro route was removed from the state highway system (it was later SH 10). A portion of the former SH 28 from Jacksboro to Benjamin was reassigned as SH 24. A portion of SH 22 from Graham to Olney that was concurrent with SH 28, was also signed as SH 24, and was not concurrent with another state highway as there were two state routes that replaced part of SH 22 north and south of SH 24. Reno, Lamar County, Texas
Reno is a city in Lamar County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,166 at the 2010 census, and 3,454 in 2020. History Reno, on U.S. Highway 82 adjacent to Paris in Lamar County, may have been a switching station on the Texas and Pacific Railway, which was built through the area in 1876. In 1886 the community had two schools, one for whites and one for blacks. The town at one time may have been named Davis, or the names Davis and Reno may have been used concurrently, since records from 1886 to 1887 show a post office called Davis at Reno Switch, and records from 1890 to 1891 still have a Davis post office, by then at Reno. Reno had a general store and a grocery store in 1891. Its post office was discontinued in 1907. By 1942 it had four businesses and a population of eighty, and by 1948 it still had two schools in operation. Reno incorporated in 1968, and by 1969 its population was 180.
