Lagos State House Of Assembly
The Lagos State House of Assembly is the state legislature of Lagos State. It is situated along Governor's Avenue in the state capital, Ikeja. The House of Assembly is currently under the All Progressives Congress political party which is the current ruling party in Lagos State. There have been nine different house of assemblies, the very first one was inaugurated 2 October 1979 and the present one was inaugurated 7 June 2019. There are forty members of the House of Assembly, two represent one of the twenty various local government areas in Lagos. Leadership The present Speaker of the House of Assembly is The Right Honourable Mudashiru Obasa (Member representing Agege I) and he is the first to be re-elected into office three consecutive times, and a fifth term record. Functions The purpose of the House of Assembly is to "provide information on the scope of responsibilities, services and commitment for the entire people of Lagos State". Politics Of Lagos State
Lagos State operates a multi-party political system. The politics of Lagos State has been dominated by the All Progressives Congress since 1999 when Bola Tinubu became the first democratically elected governor of Lagos State, followed closely by the People's Democratic Party. Branches Lagos State has a classic tripartite separation of powers system consisting of the executive, the legislature and the judiciary. The executive is headed by the governor who exercises executive power upon his or her election. Headed by a Speaker, the legislature consists of a forty-member House of Assembly vested with legislative power while the judiciary through the Lagos State Judiciary is charged with the exercising of judicial power. Lagos State Judiciary
The Lagos State Judiciary is one of the three co-equal branches of the Lagos State Government organized under the Constitution of Nigeria and laws of Lagos State. The Chief Judges are appointed by the State Governor with the consent of the House of Assembly. Courts The Lagos State courts comprises three levels of courts. The high court is the court of last resort before the Supreme Court of Nigeria. It is generally an appellate court that operates under discretionary review, meaning that the Court can choose which cases to hear, by granting of writs of certiorari.
