Joseph Harvey Ladew
Joseph Harvey Ladew Sr. (April 10, 1865 – February 16, 1940) was one of the largest leather manufacturers in the world with Fayerweather & Ladew, and he was a yachtsman. Biography He was born on April 10, 1865, to Rebecca Krom (?-1905) and Harvey Smith Ladew I (?-1888) in Shokan, New York. He attended Columbia School of Mines in 1885 and left the program to join the family run Fayerweather & Ladew in Glen Cove, New York. The company was started by his brother, Edward R. Ladew in 1898. He became a partner in the company on February 1, 1889. On November 27, 1901, he married Jennie Bennett House. They had two children: Joseph Harvey Ladew Jr. (1905-?) and Oliver Ladew (1906-1979). Ladew died on February 16, 1940, at LeRoy Sanitarium in Manhattan. Harvey Smith Ladew II (April 6, 1887 – July 28, 1976) was an American topiary enthusiast, and a fox hunting enthusiast, who created the Ladew Topiary Gardens in Monkton, Maryland. Biography Ladew was born in Manhattan, New York City on April 6, 1887 to Edward R. Ladew. He had a sister Elise Wall Ladew (1890–1978) who married William Russell Grace III. As a child Ladew spoke French before he spoke English and was treated to boyhood drawing lessons from curators at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Ladew family traveled extensively, often visiting relatives in Europe. Ladew was in Europe at the outbreak of World War I and subsequently served during the war as an Army liaison officer for the American forces. After the war's conclusion, Ladew returned home and withdrew from active management of the family business, instead indulging in pursuit of his own interests. One of these passions was fox hunting. Ladew Topiary Gardens
__NOTOC__ Ladew Topiary Gardens () are nonprofit gardens with topiary located in Monkton, Maryland. The gardens were established in the 1930s by socialite and huntsman Harvey S. Ladew (1887–1976), who in 1929 had bought a farm to build his estate. The house and gardens are open April through October, weekdays and weekends; an admission fee is charged. The grounds contain 15 garden rooms, each devoted to a single color, plant or theme, arranged around two cross axes with vistas. The axes meet in an oval swimming pool. The garden is particularly noted for its topiary, which was strongly influenced by Ladew's extensive travel in England, where he frequently went fox hunting. Ladew designed topiaries depicting a fox hunt with horses, riders, dogs, and fox clearing a hedge, a Chinese junk with sails, swans, and a giraffe, among others.
