Mende People
The Mende are one of the two largest ethnic groups in Sierra Leone; their neighbours, the Temne people, constitute the largest ethnic group at 35.5% of the total population, which is slightly larger than the Mende at 31.2%. The Mende are predominantly found in the Southern Province and the Eastern Province. The Mende are mostly farmers and hunters. Some of the major cities with significant Mende populations include Bo, Kenema, Kailahun, and Moyamba. Bumpe
Bumpe is a small town in Bo District in the Southern Province of Sierra Leone. As of 2013 it had an estimated population of 16,123. The town is located south-west of Bo, Sierra Leone, Bo. The town is also known as Bompeh, and both names are applied to a local river. Sir Samuel Rowe, the British Colonial Governor, visited the area in 1880. Sarah Culberson
Princess Sarah Jane Culberson, Lady of Bumpe, Bumpenya (born Princess Esther Elizabeth Kposowa in 1976) is an American philanthropist, public speaker, educator, writer and actress. By birth she is a Mende princess of Bumpe in Sierra Leone. She is the co-founder of Sierra Leone Rising, a non-profit organization that raises funds to improve education, economic opportunities, and sustainable living for people in Sierra Leone. In 2009, she co-authored her memoir, titled ''A Princess Found: An American Family, an African Chiefdom, and the Daughter Who Connected Them All''. The book is being considered by Disney for development as a film directed by Stephanie Allain with Culberson as executive producer. Kposowa Foundation
Sierra Leone Rising (formerly the Kposowa Foundation) is a non-profit organization based out of Long Beach, California, United States. It was co-founded by Sarah Culberson and John Woehrle. The Kposowa Foundation's purpose is to raise funds to rebuild a boarding school, provide clean drinking water, provide economically sustainable opportunities, and improve the general quality of life for the people of Sierra Leone, West Africa. History Bumpe High School (BHS) was ransacked and burned by R.U.F. rebels during the decade-long civil war in Sierra Leone that lasted from 1991 to 2002. Most of the buildings and furnishings were destroyed or stolen. BHS was once a renowned boarding school with an enrollment of over 600 students from as far away as Nigeria. Augustine Kposowa
Prince Augustine Joseph Kposowa is a Sierre Leonean-American sociologist and previously was a professor of sociology at the University of California, Riverside, where he was also the chair of the sociology department. Early life and family Kposowa is from Bumpe, Sierra Leone and is a member of a Mende royal family. His father served as the Paramount Chief of Bumpe. He is the paternal uncle of Princess Sarah Culberson, Lady of Bumpe. Education Kposowa received his B.A. from Saint Paul's College in Liberia in 1977, his M.A. from the University of Cincinnati in 1986, and his Ph.D. from Ohio State University in 1990.
