Kerns is a neighborhood in the inner Northeast and Southeast sections of Portland, Oregon. It borders the Lloyd District and Sullivan's Gulch on the north, Laurelhurst on the east, Buckman and Sunnyside on the south, and (across the Willamette River) Old Town Chinatown on the west. The Kerns neighborhood dates back to the 1850s when the area’s first homesteader, William Kerns, wielded axes and saws to clear his 320-acre Donation Land Claim. Kerns earned a living making and selling wood shingles and shakes. By 1855, Kerns was elected by the local school district as its school director, and he led the effort to purchase land for Washington High School. Kerns has a healthy mixture of commercial buildings, condos, rental housing, and single family residences. It's streets are characterized by many trees and comfortable sidewalks. Da Vinci Arts Middle School
da Vinci Arts Middle School, also known as da Vinci Middle School, is a public middle school in the Kerns neighborhood of Portland, Oregon, in the United States. It is an arts focus school in the Portland Public School District. The building was originally used as a high school, Girls Polytechnic High School, which was renamed James Monroe High School in 1967 and closed in fall 1978, when its student body was merged with, and moved to, Washington High School. Neighborhoods In Portland, Oregon
Portland, Oregon is divided into six sections: North Portland, Northeast Portland, Northwest Portland, South Portland, Southeast Portland, and Southwest Portland. There are 95 officially recognized neighborhoods, each of which is represented by a volunteer-based neighborhood association. No neighborhood associations overlap the Willamette River, but a few overlap the addressing sextants. Sunshine Dairy was a dairy manufacturer and supplier in the Kerns neighborhood of Portland, Oregon, United States. The company was founded in 1936. As well as a full line of dairy products, the company produced plant based yogurts at its processing facility on Northeast 84th Avenue and Halsey Street in Portland. History Sunshine Dairy Foods was founded in 1936 by John Karamanos, who originally began the dairy delivery service for his friends working in Portland's food industry. Laurelhurst Theater is a movie theater located in the Kerns neighborhood in northeast Portland, Oregon. Known for showing first and second-run films and for serving food and beer, the theater was constructed in 1923 with an Art Deco design. History The theater was built by Walter Tebbetts in 1923. Tebbetts later built the Hollywood Theatre (1926) and the Oriental Theatre (1927). In 1924, ''The Sunday Oregonian'' described the $30,000 theater as "one of the most up-to-date motion-picture houses in Portland's suburbs." Charles W. Ertz was the building's architect, and G.O.
