Kalundborg Eco-industrial Park
Kalundborg Eco-Industrial Park is an industrial symbiosis network located in Kalundborg, Denmark, in which companies in the region collaborate to use each other's by-products and otherwise share resources. The Kalundborg Eco-Industrial Park is the first full realization of industrial symbiosis. The collaboration and its environmental implications arose unintentionally through private initiatives, as opposed to government planning, making it a model for private planning of eco-industrial parks. At the center of the exchange network is the Asnæs Power Station, a 1500MW coal-fired power plant, which has material and energy links with the community and several other companies. Surplus heat from this power plant is used to heat 3500 local homes in addition to a nearby fish farm, whose sludge is then sold as a fertilizer. Steam from the power plant is sold to Novo Nordisk, a pharmaceutical and enzyme manufacturer, in addition to Statoil oil refinery. This reuse of heat reduces the a ...

Church Of Our Lady, Kalundborg
The Church of Our Lady (''Vor Frue Kirke, Kalundborg'') is a historical building at Kalundborg in northwestern Zealand, Denmark. The precise date of construction is not known with any certainty, though its architecture indicates the early part of the 13th century. With its five distinctive towers, it stands on a hill above the harbour, making it the town's most imposing landmark. History The church is built of red brick, indicating that it was constructed no earlier than 1170 when brick was first used in Denmark. Coincidentally, this is also the date of the site's first fortification, the nearby castle of Esbern Snare (1127-1204). The architectural design, however, would indicate a rather later date, possibly in the first three decades of the 13th century. At the time when the church was built, a small medieval town stood on the hill. It was originally fortified by Snare's castle but this was replaced in the 14th century by Kalundborg Friary, now in ruins, with its ring walls a ...

Kalundborg Radio is a major transmission facility for long- and mediumwave at the harbour of Kalundborg in Denmark. History The transmitter site was inaugurated on 27 August 1927 and started broadcasting the first channel of Danish radio on 243 kHz longwave with 300 kW. On 1 October 1951, mediumwave broadcasts of DR P2 commenced on 1062 kHz mediumwave with 250 kW. Besides these two transmitters, there is also a common reserve transmitter. On 15 February 2007 at 00:05, longwave transmissions from Kalundborg were suspended after 80 years of service. Longwave transmissions were resumed in DRM (Digital Radio Mondiale) at reduced power (0.2 kilowatts) on 3 October 2008 after substantial modifications to the aerial earlier that year. Until mid-June 2011, broadcasts continued to be transmitted with a restricted time schedule on mediumwave band (1062 kHz or 282 meters wavelength) with 250 kilowatts. After that, the mediumwave transmitter was taken out of service an ...

Lerchenborg
Lerchenborg is a manor house located 4 km south of Kalundborg on the west coast of Zealand, Denmark. History Origins The estate was established by Carl von Ahlefeldt when he closed down the village of Østrup to establish Østrupgård in 1704 from land that used to belong to Kalundborg Castle. In 1742 it was acquired by general Christian Lerche (1692-1757). The large estate included 7 manors, 13 churches and extensive woodlands, taking in practically all of Kalundborg Amt. Lerche constructed a new seat on the estate, probably assisted by Nicolai Eigtved, Denmark's leading architect of the time. Lerche received the Order of the Elephant in 1748 and was given status of count in 1752. He renamed his estate Lerchenborg in 1754 but did not establish it as a county (''grevskab'') which, since he had no direct heirs, would fall back to the king. Instead he founded a ''stamhus'' which secured succession rights for other lines of the Lerche family. 19th century When Christian Corneli ...

Industrial Symbiosis
Industrial symbiosis a subset of industrial ecology. It describes how a network of diverse organizations can foster eco-innovation and long-term culture change, create and share mutually profitable transactions—and improve business and technical processes. Although geographic proximity is often associated with industrial symbiosis, it is neither necessary nor sufficient—nor is a singular focus on physical resource exchange. Strategic planning is required to optimize the synergies of co-location. In practice, using industrial symbiosis as an approach to commercial operations—using, recovering and redirecting resources for reuse—results in resources remaining in productive use in the economy for longer. This in turn creates business opportunities, reduces demands on the earth's resources, and provides a stepping-stone towards creating a circular economy. Industrial symbiosis is a subset of industrial ecology, with a particular focus on material and energy exchange. Indus ...
