Jefferson Airplane
Jefferson Airplane was an American rock band based in San Francisco, California, that became one of the pioneering bands of psychedelic rock. Formed in 1965, the group defined the San Francisco Sound and was the first from the Bay Area to achieve international commercial success. They headlined the Monterey Pop Festival (1967), Woodstock (1969), Altamont Free Concert (1969), and the first Isle of Wight Festival (1968) in England. Their 1967 breakout album '' Surrealistic Pillow'' was one of the most significant recordings of the Summer of Love. Two songs from that album, " Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit", are among ''Rolling Stone''s "500 Greatest Songs of All Time". Volunteers (Jefferson Airplane Album)
''Volunteers'' is the fifth studio album by American psychedelic rock band Jefferson Airplane, released in 1969 on RCA Records. The album was controversial because of its revolutionary and anti-war lyrics, along with the use of profanity. The original album title was ''Volunteers of Amerika'', but it was shortened after objections from Volunteers of America, a religious charity. This was the last album with the group for both Jefferson Airplane founder Marty Balin and drummer Spencer Dryden (although they did both appear on the "Mexico" single released in 1970 and its B-side "Have You Seen the Saucers?"). The album signifies the end of the best-remembered "classic" lineup of musicians. It turned out to be the group's last all-new LP for two years. ''Live at the Fillmore East'' is an album by the rock band Jefferson Airplane. It was recorded on May 3 and 4, 1968, at the Fillmore East in New York City. It was released on April 28, 1998. It is not to be confused with the similarly named Jefferson Airplane album '' Sweeping Up the Spotlight: Live at the Fillmore East 1969''. The song "Thing" is an experimental freeform instrumental that later morphed into "Bear Melt", which appears on ''Bless Its Pointed Little Head''. ''Jefferson Airplane Loves You'' is a three-CD boxed set of recordings by the San Francisco rock band Jefferson Airplane with extensive liner notes by Jeff Tamarkin, author of the Jefferson Airplane history ''Got a Revolution: The Turbulent Flight of Jefferson Airplane''. Many of the tracks are previously unreleased live recordings or studio rehearsals, but several are lifted from prior Jefferson Airplane albums. A song by The Great Society, Grace Slick's original band, appears on the first CD. A Quadradisc quadraphonic version of the ''Volunteers'' album was released, and a few of the songs are from this release, but have been remixed into conventional stereo. Because of the remix, any psychedelic movements of instruments from front-to-back or side-to-side behind the listener that were present in the quadradisc version are lost. ''2400 Fulton Street'' is a compilation album of music from the San Francisco rock band Jefferson Airplane, originally released in 1987 as a double LP containing 25 tracks. The title is taken from the street address of a mansion the band bought in 1966 and used as a residence. It is located across the street from Golden Gate Park. The expanded CD release is titled "''2400 Fulton Street --- The CD Collection''", and contains 11 extra tracks including one that comprises their otherwise unavailable Levis radio commercials of 1967. At the time, Levi Strauss marketed a line of jeans that were bleached white by exposure to sea water. ''Flight Log (1966–1976)'' is a compilation album by the American rock band Jefferson Airplane. Released in January 1977 as a double-LP as Grunt CYL2-1255, it is a compilation of Jefferson Airplane and Airplane-related tracks, including tracks by Jefferson Starship and Hot Tuna, as well as solo tracks by Paul Kantner, Grace Slick, and Jorma Kaukonen. Although primarily a compilation album, the album includes one previously unreleased song: "Please Come Back" written by Ron Nagle and performed by Jefferson Starship. "Please Come Back" is not available on any other release. Among the guest musicians featured on the album are David Crosby of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young on one track and Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead on three, two of which also feature Mickey Hart. ''Early Flight'' is a 1974 compilation album by the American psychedelic rock band Jefferson Airplane, released as Grunt CYL1-0437. It features previously unreleased material from 1966, 1967, and 1970 as well as both sides of a non-album 1970 single. The first three tracks come from the recording sessions for ''Jefferson Airplane Takes Off'' which took place in December, 1965 at RCA Victor's Music Center of the World recording studio in Hollywood. These tracks feature vocals by Signe Toly Anderson and Skip Spence on drums. "Runnin' 'Round This World" had been previously released as a B-side on the "It's No Secret" single. The closing two tracks on side one and the first track from side two come from the recording sessions for '' Surrealistic Pillow'', which took place from October through November, 1966 at RCA Victor's Music Center of the World. ''Thirty Seconds Over Winterland'' is an album by the American psychedelic rock band Jefferson Airplane. It was recorded live in August and September 1972, at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago and the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco. It was released in April 1973; reflecting the band's declining commercial stature, it only peaked at No. 52 on the ''Billboard'' chart. Recorded during the ''Long John Silver'' tour, ''Thirty Seconds Over Winterland'' was the band's second live album, after ''Bless Its Pointed Little Head''. ''The Worst of Jefferson Airplane'' is the first compilation album from the rock band Jefferson Airplane, released in November 1970 as RCA Victor LSP-4459. The "Worst" in the title is ironic as the album features all of Jefferson Airplane's hit singles up to that point. It peaked at #12 on the ''Billboard'' 200 in 1971 and has since gone platinum. Bless Its Pointed Little Head
''Bless Its Pointed Little Head'' is a live album by Jefferson Airplane recorded at both the Fillmore East and West in the fall of 1968 and released in 1969 as RCA Victor LSP-4133. Five songs on the album had not appeared on any of the band's previous studio recordings. Many of the Airplane's recordings on the live album were longer than their studio performances. The performance emphasized their vocal harmonies and revealed a harder rocking group. Guitar and bass lines were more in-depth in their construction, revealing complex instrumentals. However, some of the band's hit singles, such as "White Rabbit", were not included. It distinguished a different focus in their live concerts compared to their studio albums. ''Jefferson Airplane'' is the eighth and final studio album by San Francisco rock band Jefferson Airplane, released on Epic Records in 1989. Marty Balin, Paul Kantner, Grace Slick, Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady all returned for the album and supporting tour, though Spencer Dryden did not participate. The album and accompanying tour would mark the last time Jefferson Airplane would perform together until their 1996 induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
