John Arden "Jay" Ferguson (born May 10, 1947) is an American rock music, rock and pop music, pop musician known for his work with the bands Spirit (band), Spirit and Jo Jo Gunne, and his 1978 solo hit "Thunder Island (song), Thunder Island". His later career has been as a composer of music for television programs and films. Many people know Ferguson for composing the theme song for the American version of ''The Office (American TV series), The Office'' on NBC. Childhood and early musical career Ferguson was born on May 10, 1947, in Burbank, California, Burbank in the San Fernando Valley, California, to John Becker and Kathleen Jane Ferguson. He grew up in the Van Nuys, Los Angeles, California, Van Nuys and Canoga Park, Los Angeles, California, Canoga Park sections of Los Angeles. Jay Ferguson (born October 14, 1968) is a Canadian musician and a member of the rock band Sloan. He is the only member in Sloan who comes from Halifax, Nova Scotia. Biography When Ferguson was 12 years old, he was given a job at Ol'Dan's Records, a secondhand record store. Before joining Sloan, Ferguson was in a band with Chris Murphy from 1987 to 1990 called Kearney Lake Road. In 1991, Ferguson and Murphy started Sloan along with Patrick Pentland and Andrew Scott. Ferguson plays rhythm guitar and occasionally bass and drums.
