James Island is a town in Charleston County, South Carolina, United States. It is located in the central and southern parts of James Island. Charleston Executive Airport
Charleston Executive Airport is in Charleston in Charleston County, South Carolina, seven miles southwest of the city. It is owned by the Charleston County Aviation Authority. The airport serves the general aviation community, with no airline service. History The airport opened in April 1943 named Johns Island Army Airfield. Initially it was an auxiliary to Columbia Army Air Base as an unmanned emergency landing airfield. Fort Pemberton was one of the larger confederate forts was constructed in the defense of Charleston, South Carolina during the American Civil War. At the war's outset in 1861, it became evident that control of the western regions of James Island and the Stono River was to be an important element in the defense of the city. Confederate military authorities of the time believed that Union occupation of James Island would leave Charleston subject to attack from the southeast. From this position the city would assuredly fall to the Union. Fort Johnson is a state-owned historic site of military and political significance located on the northeast point of James Island in Charleston County, South Carolina. History Fort Johnson was strategically important during the colonial era, as it was located on the banks of the Ashley River. The fort was named after Sir Nathaniel Johnson, who served as the Governor of Carolina from 1703 to 1709. It was the site of the first raising of the South Carolina state flag in 1775. The magazine was built in 1765 and is a brick structure that measures 27 feet long and 20 feet wide. It was buried during the American Civil War by Confederate soldiers, and uncovered in 1931.
