Ireland National Rugby Union Team
The Ireland national rugby union team is the men's representative national team for the island of Ireland in rugby union. The team represents both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Ireland competes in the annual Six Nations Championship and in the Rugby World Cup. Ireland is one of the four unions that make up the British & Irish Lions – players eligible to play for Ireland are also eligible for the Lions. The Ireland national team dates to 1875, when it played its first international match against England. Ireland reached number 1 in the World Rugby Rankings for the first time in 2019. Eleven former Ireland players have been inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame. Ciaran Fitzgerald
Ciaran Fitzgerald (born 4 June 1952) is an Irish former rugby union player. He captained Ireland to the Triple Crown in 1982 and 1985, and the Five Nations Championship in 1983. Fitzgerald also captained the Lions on their 1983 tour. After the conclusion of his playing career, Fitzgerald was coach of the national team. Early life Fitzgerald was born in Loughrea, County Galway. Rugby career Fitzgerald first played rugby while at Garbally College, and was chosen to play hooker by teacher and priest John Kirby. Fitzgerald played for University College Galway, and then went on to play senior rugby for St. Mary's College in Dublin. Fitzgerald rose to prominence in the game, and made his test debut for against Australia on 3 June 1979, during an Irish tour of Australia. He captained Ireland to the Triple Crown in 1982 and 1985, and the Five Nations Championship in 1983. Warren Gatland
Warren David Gatland (born 17 September 1963) is a New Zealand rugby union coach and former player who is currently in his second spell as the head coach of the Wales national team. As head coach of Wales from 2007 to 2019, he won four Six Nations titles, including three Grand Slams, and reached the semi-finals of the 2011 and 2019 Rugby World Cups. Gatland was also head coach of the British & Irish Lions on three tours, to Australia in 2013, when they won the Test series 2–1; New Zealand in 2017, when the series was drawn; and South Africa in 2021, losing the series 2–1. He has previously coached Connacht, Ireland, London Wasps, where he won three Premierships and the Heineken Cup, and Waikato, with whom he won the Air New Zealand Cup. Paddy Johns
Patrick Stephen Johns, known as Paddy Johns (born 19 February 1968, in Portadown) was an Irish rugby union player from 1990 to 2000. He played mainly as a lock and occasionally in the back-row. He won 59 caps, scoring 4 tries and 20 points. He had his international debut, on 27 October 1990 against Argentina, in Dublin, in a match won 20-18, and his final appearance came on 11 November 2000, with Japan, in a win of 78-9, again in Dublin. He played at the 1995 Rugby World Cup and the 1999 Rugby World Cup. 1998 Ireland Rugby Union Tour Of South Africa
The 1998 Ireland rugby union tour of South Africa was the team's third tour to the country, having previously visited in 1961 and 1981. Both Paul Wallace and Keith Wood had previously been on a tour to South Africa with the British and Irish Lions in 1997. Cape Town-born Dion O'Cuinneagain, had captained South Africa at both schoolboy and sevens level, before he switched allegiances. He made his senior international debut for Ireland in the 37–13 defeat against South Africa on 13 June 1998. Justin Fitzpatrick and Trevor Brennan also made their senior international debuts in the same game. A fourth debutant, Justin Bishop, scored a try while Eric Elwood added a conversion and two penalties. Michael Bradley (rugby)
Michael Bradley (born 17 November 1962) is a former Munster and Irish rugby union player. He is the current head coach of Italian United Rugby Championship side Zebre. Playing career He played primarily at Scrum-half (rugby union), scrum half and was capped 40 times for Ireland, 15 times as captain, scoring 40 points in the process. He made his debut in 1984 against Australia national rugby union team, Australia and was a member of the 1985 Triple Crown (rugby union), Triple Crown team. His final game for Ireland was in 1995 against the New Zealand national rugby union team. Gerry Murphy (rugby)
Gerry Murphy is a former Irish rugby coach and player and currently involved with Leinster Rugby as domestic team manager. Playing career Murphy first played for Dublin University and Wanderers. Coaching Murphy began his coaching career at Wanderers. He has coached Clontarf RFC and the Ireland U-21s. He was in charge of the senior Ireland team from 1992 to 1995, beating England, twice home and away, in 1993 and 1994. Murphy also lead Ireland to the quarter-finals of the 1995 Rugby World Cup. He coached Terenure College RFC and Terenure College School, he was the backs coach when Terenure won the Leinster Schools Senior Cup in 2001. Phil Danaher (rugby Union)
Philip Danaher (born 5 October 1965) is a retired Irish rugby union Fullback and Centre. He played for St Munchin's College, Garryowen (as captain), Lansdowne, Munster and won 28 caps between 1988 and 1995 for Ireland. He made his international debut against Scotland on 16 January 1988 and captained the team 3 times, including the 1992 Ireland rugby union tour of New Zealand. . Danaher was a squad member in the Five Nations Championship from 1988 to 1990 and 1992 to 1995 and in tours to France 1988, North America 1989, New Zealand 1992 and Australia 1994. He was not a member of the squads for the 1991 or 1995 Rugby World Cups. He retired in 1996 following a serious thumb injury.
