The county was founded in 1851; it was named for General Tilghman Ashurst Howard, a Representative of Indiana. Howard County Courthouse (Iowa)
The Howard County Courthouse in Cresco, Iowa, United States was built in 1880. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981 as a part of the County Courthouses in Iowa Thematic Resource. The courthouse is the third building the county has used for court functions and county administration. History When Howard County, Iowa, Howard County was organized in 1855 the county judge named Vernon Springs as the county seat. Later in the year he ordered that the court and all county records be moved to Howard Center. New Oregon wanted the county seat there, but Pikes Peak was chosen by a committee instead. A courthouse was built there in 1859. As the county grew a new courthouse was needed and Cresco made a bid to build it in their town. The county board of supervisors accepted the bid and a courthouse was built there in 1876. It was destroyed in a fire and the present courthouse was begun in 1879 and completed a year later. Chickasaw County, Iowa
Chickasaw County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 census, the population was 12,012. Its county seat is New Hampton. The county was named for the southern Indian Nation whose chief was ''Bradford''. History Chickasaw County was founded in January 1851. It was named after the Chickasaw tribe, which lived in the Southern United States at the time. The first nonindigenous settlers arrived in 1848 and the first county seat was from 1854 in Bradford, in the southwestern corner of the county. In the spring of 1857, the seat was moved to New Hampton, located near the geographic center, and was then called Chickasaw Center. The first county offices were housed in private houses and in the school building. The first courthouse, a wood-frame building, was erected in 1865. Florenceville is an unincorporated community located in Howard County, Iowa, United States. It is adjacent to the village of Granger, Minnesota. Geography Florenceville is located at 43°29'54" North, 92°7'58" West. Florenceville is in the northwest portion of section 10, Albion Township, Howard County. The Iowa-Minnesota state line forms the village's northern border. The Upper Iowa River runs through the village. The area features a Karst topography. Niagara Cave, located a few miles northeast of the village, is one of the largest caves in the Midwest. History Florenceville, platted as Florence, sprang up in the mid-19th century. Protivin is a city in Chickasaw and Howard counties in the U.S. state of Iowa. The population was 269 at the time of the 2020 census. Early settlers named the city after the Bohemian town of Protivín in what is now the south of the Czech Republic. The current mayor of Protivin is Michael Lensing. History The first Czech settlers arrived around 1855 and established themselves because the landscape reminded them of their home region.
