Handball has a rich history in Russia, dating back to the early 20th century when the sport was introduced to the country by European immigrants. However, it wasn't until the 1950s that handball began to gain popularity in Russia. Soviet Union Era In the 1970s and 1980s, the Soviet Union dominated international handball competitions, winning several world championships one in men and three in women, in the Olympic they won two gold in women and three in men. Team Handball
Handball (also known as team handball, European handball or Olympic handball) is a team sport in which two teams of seven players each (six outcourt players and a goalkeeper) pass a ball using their hands with the aim of throwing it into the goal of the other team. A standard match consists of two periods of 30 minutes, and the team that scores more goals wins. Modern handball is played on a court of , with a goal in the middle of each end. The goals are surrounded by a zone where only the defending goalkeeper is allowed; goals must be scored by throwing the ball from outside the zone or while "diving" into it. The sport is usually played indoors, but outdoor variants exist in the forms of field handball, Czech handball (which were more common in the past) and beach handball. European Handball Federation
The European Handball Federation (EHF) is the umbrella organisation for European handball. Founded on 17 November 1991, it is made of 50 member federations and two associated federations (England and Scotland), and is headquartered in Vienna, Austria. History EHF was founded on 17 November 1991 in Berlin, Germany, although the first EHF Congress convened on 5 June 1992 and assigned EHF's headquarters to Vienna, Austria from 1 September that year. In 2012 the EHF Office celebrated 20 years since it first opened its doors. The International Handball Federation (IHF) is the administrative and controlling body for handball and beach handball. Zvezda Zvenigorod (russian: Звезда Звенигород, lit. ''Star Zvenigorod'') is a Russian women's handball club from Zvenigorod, near Moscow. Dinamo Volgograd (russian: Динамо Волгоград) is a Russian women's handball club from Volgograd. Founded in 1972 as Burevestnik Volgograd, it represented Rotor Volgograd following the collapse of the Soviet Union and was subsequently named Aqva before taking its current name in 2003. Handball Club Lada is a Russian women's handball club from Tolyatti playing in the Russian Super League. Founded in 1998, Lada became the leading team in the Super League winning five championships in a row between 2002 and 2006 and a sixth one in 2008. It also built itself a name in Europe winning the 2002 Cup Winners' Cup in its international debut and reaching the final of the 2007 Champions League and the next edition's semifinals. Voldemaras Novickis
Voldemaras Novickis (22 February 1956 – 31 January 2022) was a Lithuanian handball player who competed in the 1980 Summer Olympics and in the 1988 Summer Olympics. In 1980, he won the silver medal with the Soviet team. He played all six matches and scored nine goals. Eight years later, he won the gold medal with the Soviet team. He played five matches including the final. In 1987 he won EHF Cup with Granitas Kaunas. One year later in 1988, Granitas Kaunas managed to get into the EHF Cup final one more time, however they lost by a very narrow margin. From 1993 he became head coach of Granitas Kaunas and managed until 2019 with numerous titles won. Vyacheslav Vladimirovich Atavin (russian: Вячеслав Владимирович Атавин, born February 4, 1967, in Krasnodar) is a former Soviet Union, Soviet and Russian Team handball, handball player. During the Soviet Union, Soviet period of his career Atavin trained at Dynamo (sports society), Dynamo in Astrakhan. He became the Honoured Master of Sports of the USSR in 1988 and competed for the USSR National Team between 1988 and 1991.
