Hamme () is a municipality located in the Belgian province of East Flanders. The municipality comprises the towns of Hamme proper, Kastel Moerzeke, and . In 2018, Hamme had a total population of 24,827. The total area is 40.21 km². The current mayor of Hamme is Herman Vijt, from the CD&V (Christian Democratic) party. Hamme also has its own legends. The most famous one is the legend of the " Hamse Wuiten". The people of Hamme are also called ''Hamse Wuitens''. The "Hamse wuiten" is also the main mascot in a streetparade at the end of March every year. The inhabitants dress up and build big trucks with funny giant puppets, making fun of local and national politicians and scandals. Herman Brusselmans
Herman Frans Martha Brusselmans (; born 9 October 1957) is a Belgian novelist, poet, playwright and columnist. He lives in Ghent. He is one of the best-selling authors in Flanders, but controversial at the same time for his profane language and offensive comedy. Life and career Herman Brusselmans studied Germanic philology at the University of Ghent. In his early twenties he was a football player. He played as a left winger for Vigor Hamme and Sporting Lokeren. He now has his own football team called "De Woody's", after his late dog Woody. Brusselmans married Gloria Van Iddergem in 1981 but divorced from her ten years later. He married his second wife Tania De Metsenaere in 2005. Their relationship ended in 2010. Lippenbroek
The Lippenbroek is a former polder in the Belgian freshwater part of the Schelde-estuary, currently functioning as a pilot project for the restoration of intertidal habitat in a densely populated estuary. The area of 10 ha, situated on the territory of the Belgian community of Hamme, started functioning as a flood control area (FCA) in March 2006. Through a construction of sluices, the area is in close contact with the river Schelde: water is flowing in at high tide, and out at low tide. Petrus Vertenten
Petrus Vertenten (1884 – 1946) was a Belgian Missionary of the Sacred Heart in Dutch New Guinea. Vertenten lived and worked on the south coast of Dutch New Guinea from 1910 to 1925 among the Marind-anim, a Papuan people in the wider area of Merauke, and can be described as an authority on knowledge about them. Vertenten later spent time in Belgian Congo, making ethnological researches in all places he visited. He was also a painter and a draftsman, producing perhaps the first colored portraits of a Papuan culture. When the Marinds were risking extinction due to the spread of an imported venereal disease combined with their particular sexual practices, Vertenten repeatedly alerted the Dutch government in Merauke, and eventually got to speak to the governor-general in Batavia. He went down in history as "savior of the Kaja-Kaja's" and was appointed a Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau for his efforts. Kristel Verbeke
Kristel Philemon Charlotte Verbeke (born 10 December 1975 in Hamme) is a Flemish singer, actress, host and one of the first members of the girl group K3. After leaving K3 in 2015, she became the group's manager, remaining in this position until 2017. Since leaving K3, Verbeke focused on TV producing and acting. Moerzeke
Moerzeke is a village located at the river Scheldt in the municipality Hamme, Belgium. History The name comes from the Gallo-Roman ''Mauriciacum'', which means ''good or villa belonging to Mauricius''. In the passing ages the name Moerzeke has been written in various ways. In Latin manuscripts from 1125 and 1156 you can read ''Murzeke'' and ''Murceke'', in 1171 ''Morzeka'', in 1225 ''Morsca'', in 1259 and 1261 ''Morseke'', in 1330 ''Mourseka''. At the end of the sixteenth century Mercator indicates Moerzeke as ''Moeshe'' on his maps. This name is still used by the people of Moerzeke. The village has a history of disasters. Ferdinand Bracke (born 25 May 1939) is a Belgian former professional road and track cyclist who is most famous for holding the World Hour Record (48.093 km) and winning the overall title at the 1971 Vuelta a España in front of Wilfried David of Belgium and Luis Ocaña of Spain. K3 is a Belgian-Dutch girl group with a Dutch-language pop repertoire, consisting of Hanne Verbruggen, Marthe De Pillecyn and Julia Boschman. The group's name is derived from first letters of the three first members from 1998: Karen Damen, Kristel Verbeke and Kathleen Aerts. Frans Van Damme (1858 – 1925) was a Belgian painter.
