Haderslev Municipality
Haderslev (german: Hadersleben) is a town and municipality on the east coast of the Jutland peninsula in the Region of Southern Denmark. It includes the island of Årø as well as several other smaller islands in the Little Belt. The municipality covers and has a population of 56,414 (2008). Its mayor is Jens Christian Gjesing, representing the Social Democratic Party. Due to ''Kommunalreformen'' ("The Municipal Reform" of 2007), Haderslev municipality was merged on January 1 of that year with the former municipalities of Gram and Vojens, as well as Bjerning, Hjerndrup, and Fjelstrup parishes of Christiansfeld Municipality and Bevtoft parish of Nørre Rangstrup Municipality. The municipality is part of Triangle Region and of the East Jutland metropolitan area, which had a total population of 1.378 million in 2016. Aarøsund
Aarøsund is a village in south-eastern Denmark situated in the region of Sønderjylland 15 kilometres east of Haderslev. It is also the name of the narrow strait between the village and the island of Årø. It has a population of 321 (1 January 2022) and is part of the municipality of Haderslev and the regional entity Region of Southern Denmark, as well as the parish of Øsby. In spite of its slight size, Aarøsund has a significant part in Danish history. Archaeological surveys have shown the area to have been inhabited since the Iron Age with the occurrence of an abundance of flint tools suggesting an even earlier settlement here. In 1231 King Valdemar's cadaster mentions the King's sovereignty of the ferry route between Aarøsund and Assens on the island of Fyn. North Schleswig Germans
Approximately 15,000 people in Denmark belong to an autochthonous ethnic German minority traditionally referred to as ''hjemmetyskere'' meaning "domestic Germans" in Danish, and as ''Nordschleswiger'' in German. This minority of Germans hold Danish citizenship and self-identify as ethnic Germans. They generally speak German or Low German alongside South Jutlandic dialect of Danish as their home languages. Minority Languages Of Denmark
The Danish language is the official language in Denmark. In the Faroe Islands, the Faroese language and the Danish language are the official languages, and both must be taught in schools.
