Graham Island
Graham Island () is the largest island in the Haida Gwaii archipelago (previously known as the Queen Charlotte Islands), lying off the mainland coast of British Columbia, Canada. It is separated by the narrow Skidegate Channel from the other principal island of the group to the south, Moresby Island (''T'aaxwii X̱aaydag̱a Gwaay.yaay linag̱waay'' in the language of the Haida people). It has a population of 3,858 (2016 census), an area of , and is the 101st largest island in the world and Canada's 22nd largest island. Graham Island was named in 1853 by James Charles Prevost, commander of HMS ''Virago'', for Sir James Graham, 2nd Baronet, who was First Lord of the Admiralty at the time. North is one of the four compass points or cardinal directions. It is the opposite of south and is perpendicular to east and west. Tlell, British Columbia
Tlell is a small, unincorporated area on the east coast of Graham Island, which is part of Haida Gwaii (formerly the Queen Charlotte Islands) in British Columbia, Canada. History Besides Mexican Tom, who set up camp at Tlell in 1904, Eric Richardson was one of – if not the first – to make this camp a permanent settlement, by establishing the Richardson Ranch, which is still active and on the spot. Tlell was connected to Port Clements and Skidegate (43 km) via a paved Highway 16 in 1969. The village frames the southern end of Naikoon Provincial Park, known for the nearby Pesuta Shipwreck, and its long stretches of sandy beach. Other tourist attractions include the Tlell River and Mayer Lake, with the Tlell river hosting many salmon in fall. Old Massett
Old Massett, named G̱aw in X̱aad kíl, is an Indigenous Canadian village on Graham Island in Haida Gwaii, British Columbia. It lies on the east side of Masset Sound close to the town of Masset; the area of land it is on is legally designated Masset Indian Reserve No. 1, or Masset 1. The original name of the settlement was Uttewas, meaning "white-slope village" in the Haida language. It is populated by Haida people of both Ḵuustak, the Eagle matrilineage, and Ḵayx̱al, the Raven matrilineage. The town is administered by the Old Massett Village Council. Its population has fluctuated over the last one hundred and fifty years; smallpox, especially the 1862 Pacific Northwest smallpox epidemic, drastically reduced its numbers in the late 1800s, but in 1968, it had over 1,000 people and was the largest village in Haida Gwaii. Juskatla, British Columbia
Juskatla is a settlement on Juus Ḵáahlii (formerly Juskatla Inlet), a sidewater off the southern end of Masset Inlet on Graham Island, the largest and northernmost of the Haida Gwaii islands off the North Coast of British Columbia, Canada. Background Juskatla is solely a logging camp. It is sometimes also called Juskatla Camp and has neither a residential area nor any businesses other than forestry facilities. Daajing Giids
(), known as Queen Charlotte from 1891–2022, is a village municipality in the Haida Gwaii archipelago (also known as the "Queen Charlotte Islands") in the province of British Columbia, Canada. It is located on the southern end of Graham Island at Skidegate Inlet and is a member municipality of the North Coast Regional District. The name "Queen Charlotte" dates back to 1787 when Captain George Dixon was on a trading cruise along the coast. He named the island for his two hundred-ton vessel, the ''Queen Charlotte''. The village was founded in 1891 and in 1908 was the first townsite registered in the islands, although it wasn't incorporated as a municipality until 2005. It was previously represented as part of Electoral Area F of that regional district, which was coterminous with the Queen Charlotte Islands (which now comprises Electoral Areas D and E). The First Lord of the Admiralty, or formally the Office of the First Lord of the Admiralty, was the political head of the English and later British Royal Navy. He was the government's senior adviser on all naval affairs, responsible for the direction and control of the Admiralty, and also of general administration of the Naval Service of the Kingdom of England, Great Britain in the 18th century, and then the United Kingdom, including the Royal Navy, the Royal Marines, and other services. It was one of the earliest known permanent government posts. Apart from being the political head of the Naval Service the post holder was simultaneously the pre-eminent member of the Board of Admiralty. Sir James Graham, 2nd Baronet
Sir James Robert George Graham, 2nd Baronet (1 June 1792 – 25 October 1861) was a British statesman, who notably served as Home Secretary and First Lord of the Admiralty. He was the eldest son of Sir James Graham, 1st Baronet, by Lady Catherine, eldest daughter of the 7th Earl of Galloway. In 1819, he married Fanny Callander, youngest daughter of Sir James Campbell of Craigforth and Ardkinglas Castle. Sir James was created Doctor of Laws at the University of Cambridge in 1835, was Lord Rector of the University of Glasgow, 1840. He was First Lord of the Admiralty from 1830 to 1834 when he resigned on account of the government pressing for a reform of the Irish Church. He became Secretary of the Home Department from September 1841 to July 1846 and again First Lord of the Admiralty from December 1852 until February 1855. James Charles Prevost (1810–1891) was an admiral in the British Empire, British Royal Navy.
