Gjerstad is a municipality in Agder county, Norway. It is located in the traditional region of Sørlandet, in the southeastern part of the county, along the border with Telemark county. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Gjerstad. Other villages in the municipality include Ausland, Eikeland, Fiane, Gryting, Østerholt, Rød, Sundebru, and Vestøl. The municipality is the 256th largest by area out of the 356 municipalities in Norway. Gjerstad is the 258th most populous municipality in Norway with a population of 2,427. Gjerstad Church
Gjerstad Church ( no, Gjerstad kirke, locally: ''Gjerstad kjørke'') is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Gjerstad Municipality in Agder county, Norway. It is located in the village of Gjerstad. It is the church for the Gjerstad parish which is part of the Aust-Nedenes prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Agder og Telemark. The white, wooden church was built in a long church design in 1848 by Lars Listøl using plans by the architect Christian H. Grosch. The church seats about 500 people. History The earliest existing historical records of the church date back to the year 1400 (''Gerikstadir Kirkje''), but the church was likely founded around the year 1300. The first church was a stave church located about to the southeast of the present location. The village is located at the northern end of the lake Gjerstadvatnet at the northern end of the Norwegian County Road 418. Sørlandet

Agder
Agder is a county (''fylke'') and traditional region in the southern part of Norway. The county was established on 1 January 2020, when the old Vest-Agder and Aust-Agder counties were merged. Since the early 1900s, the term Sørlandet ("south country, south land, southland") has been commonly used for this region, sometimes with the inclusion of neighbouring Rogaland. Before that time, the area was considered a part of Western Norway.
