Gdovsky Uyezd
Gdovsky Uyezd (''Гдовский уезд'') was one of the subdivisions of the Saint Petersburg Governorate of the Russian Empire. It was situated in the southwestern part of the governorate. Its administrative centre was Gdov. Demographics At the time of the Russian Empire Census of 1897, Gdovsky Uyezd had a population of 145,573. Of these, 88.6% spoke Russian language, Russian, 10.5% Estonian language, Estonian, 0.2% German language, German, 0.2% Finnish language, Finnish, 0.1% Latvian language, Latvian, 0.1% Polish language, Polish and 0.1% Yiddish as their native language. Saint Petersburg Governorate was a province (''guberniya'') of the Russian Empire, with its capital in Saint Petersburg. The governorate was composed of of area and 2,112,033 inhabitants. It was bordered by Governorate of Estonia, Estonian and Governorate of Livonia, Livonian Governorates to the west, Pskov Governorate to the south, Novgorod Governorate to the east, Olonets Governorate to the northeast, and Viipuri Province, Vyborg Governorate of the Grand Duchy of Finland to the north. The governorate covered most of the areas of modern Leningrad Oblast and Ida-Viru County, Ida-Viru, Jõgeva County, Jõgeva, Tartu County, Tartu, Põlva County, Põlva, and Võru County, Võru counties of Estonia. Gdov
Gdov () is a types of inhabited localities in Russia, town and the administrative center of Gdovsky District in Pskov Oblast, Russia, located on the river Gdovka, just from its outflow into Lake Peipus. Population: History It was first mentioned in the beginning of the 14th century, as an outpost guarding the city of Pskov. Between 1431 and 1434, Pskovians built a Gdov Kremlin, fortress there, the remains of which can still be seen. It was attacked on numerous occasions by the Sweden, Swedes and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (e.g., during the Russo–Swedish War (1590–1595) and the Ingrian War), and captured by the Swedes in 1614, but was finally returned to Russia in 1617 according to the Treaty of Stolbovo.
