Gilbert Ganong
Gilbert White Ganong (May 22, 1851 – October 31, 1917) was a Canadian politician, the 14th Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick and co-founder of Ganong Bros. Limited, candy makers in the town of St. Stephen. Born in Springfield, New Brunswick the son of Francis Daniel Ganong and Deborah Ruth Kierstead, he was a descendant of Jean Guenon, a Huguenot exile from La Rochelle, France who settled in New Amsterdam during the second half of the 17th century then several generations later following the American Revolutionary War, some of Guenon's antecedents were United Empire Loyalists who settled in New Brunswick (then part of Nova Scotia) in 1783. In 1873, Gilbert Ganong co-founded Ganong Bros. Limited with his brother James. In 1896, he was elected to the House of Commons of Canada for the riding of Charlotte. Travis Ganong
Travis Ganong (born July 14, 1988) is an American World Cup alpine ski racer and specializes in the speed events of downhill and super-G. Born and raised in Truckee, California, he competed for the U.S. at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, and placed fifth in the downhill at Rosa Khutor, 0.41 seconds behind the winner. Ganong gained his first World Cup victory on December 2014 in a downhill in Santa Caterina, Italy. At his third World Championships in 2015 at Beaver Creek, Colorado, he won the silver medal in the downhill. William Francis Ganong, M.A., Ph.D., LL.D., F.R.S.C., (19 February 1864 - 7 September 1941) was a Canadian biologist botanist, historian and cartographer. His botany career was spent mainly as a professor at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. In his private life he contributed to the historical and geographical understanding of his native New Brunswick. Early life and education He was born in Carleton (now West Saint John), New Brunswick, in 1864, the eldest of seven children. He is the brother of Susie, Arthur, Edwin, and Kit Ganong Whidden. At the age of seven, the family moved to St. Stephen where his father, James Harvey Ganong and uncle Gilbert Ganong established the now-famous Ganong Brothers candy factory. It was expected that young William would enter the family business when he came of age, but early on, he showed an interest in the natural world.
