Fresno State Bulldogs Football
The Fresno State Bulldogs football team represents California State University, Fresno in NCAA Division I FBS college football as a member of the Mountain West Conference. The green "V" on the Bulldogs' helmets, uniforms, and playing field symbolizes California’s Central Valley, specifically the San Joaquin Valley, the agricultural valley from which they draw their support. History Early history Football was first played on the Fresno campus in 1921, and for its first year it played as an independent. The Bulldogs joined the California Coast Conference, which included several regional opponents the next year, and moved to the Northern California Athletic Conference of which it was among the charter schools in 1925. These early years laid the foundations of rivalries to come, with games against San Jose State and Pacific in the first year, and adding UC Davis, Nevada, and San Diego State in the following years of NCAC play. California Collegiate Athletic Association
The California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) is a college athletic conference affiliated with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Division II level. All of its current members are public universities, and upon UC San Diego's departure on July 1, 2020, all are members of the California State University system (two of them being Cal Polys). It was founded in December 1938 and began competition in 1939. The commissioner of the CCAA is Mitch Cox. CCAA offices are located in Chico, California. 1939 Fresno State Bulldogs Football Team
The 1939 Fresno State Bulldogs football team represented Fresno State Normal School—now known as California State University, Fresno—as a member of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) and Far Western Conference (FWC) during the 1939 college football season. Led by fourth-year head coach James Bradshaw, Fresno State compiled an overall record of 10–1 with a mark of 1–1 in CCAA, playing second behind conference champion San Jose State. The Bulldogs were also 2–0 in FWC play, but did not play enough league game to qualify for the conference title. Fresno State outscored its opponents 244 to 98 for the season. Fresno State was ranked at No. 59 (out of 609 teams) in the final Litkenhous Ratings for 1939. Arkansas State Bears
The Central Arkansas Bears and Sugar Bears represent the University of Central Arkansas (UCA) in NCAA Division I's Football Championship Subdivision (formerly I-AA football) as a member of the ASUN Conference. The athletic program is supported by the efforts of a diverse group of over 400 male and female student-athletes. Its men's teams are called the Bears and the women's are the Sugar Bears. UCA joined the ASUN in July 2021 after having been a member of the Southland Conference. While the ASUN does not currently sponsor football, it has committed to launching an FCS football league in the near future. James Bradshaw (American Football)
James W. "Rabbit" Bradshaw was an American football player and coach. He served as the head football coach at Fresno State College—now known as California State University, Fresno—from 1936 to 1942 and again in 1946, compiling a record of 59–18–5. Bradshaw played college football at the University of Nevada. He began his coaching career at Galileo High School—now known as Galileo Academy of Science and Technology—in San Francisco before moving to Stanford University in 1928 as backfield coach.
