This is a selected list of freeware video games implemented as traditional executable files that must be downloaded and installed. Freeware games are games that are released as freeware and can be downloaded and played, free of charge, for an unlimited amount of time. Freeware
Freeware is software, often proprietary, that is distributed at no monetary cost to the end user. There is no agreed-upon set of rights, license, or EULA that defines ''freeware'' unambiguously; every publisher defines its own rules for the freeware it offers. For instance, modification, redistribution by third parties, and reverse engineering are permitted by some publishers but prohibited by others. Unlike with free and open-source software, which are also often distributed free of charge, the source code for freeware is typically not made available. Freeware may be intended to benefit its producer by, for example, encouraging sales of a more capable version, as in the freemium and shareware business models. Survival Horror
Survival horror is a Video game genre, subgenre of horror games. Although combat can be part of the gameplay, the player is made to feel less in control than in typical action games through limited ammunition or weapons, health, speed, and vision, or through various obstructions of the player's interaction with the game mechanics. The player is also challenged to find items that unlock the path to new areas and solve puzzles to proceed in the game. Games make use of strong horror themes, such as dark mazelike environments and Jump scare, unexpected attacks from enemies. The term "survival horror" was first used for the original Japanese release of ''Resident Evil (1996 video game), Resident Evil'' in 1996, which was influenced by earlier games with a horror theme such as 1989's ''Sweet Home (video game), Sweet Home'' and 1992's ''Alone in the Dark (1992 video game), Alone in the Dark''. Baldi's Basics In Education And Learning
''Baldi's Basics in Education and Learning'', retrospectively known as ''Baldi's Basics Classic'', is a 2018 horror game developed and published by Micah McGonigal. Disguised as an educational game, it is set in a schoolhouse where the player must locate seven notebooks which each consists of math problems without being caught by Baldi, his students and other school staff members, while also avoiding various obstacles. The game became popular for its difficulty, nostalgic gameplay and graphics and elements of surreal humour and simplicity. The game parodies 1990s educational games by deconstructing its elements into metafictional horror. This is enhanced in updates, such as in the conclusion of a package version called ''Baldi's Basics Classic Remastered''. ''Rock Paper Shotgun'' is a British video game journalism website. It was launched in July 2007 to focus on PC game, PC games and was acquired by Gamer Network, a network of sites led by ''Eurogamer'', in May 2017. History ''Rock Paper Shotgun'' was founded by Kieron Gillen, Jim Rossignol, Alec Meer and John Walker in August 2007. Gillen announced that he would no longer be involved in posting the day-to-day content of ''Rock Paper Shotgun'' in 2010, focusing more on his work with Marvel Comics. An adventure game is a video game genre in which the player assumes the role of a protagonist in an interactive story, driven by exploration and/or puzzle-solving. The genre's focus on story allows it to draw heavily from other narrative-based media, such as literature and film, encompassing a wide variety of genres. Babbdi
''Babbdi'' is a 2022 adventure game developed by Sirius and Léonard Lemaitre and published by Lemaitre Bros. It is freeware. Gameplay The game is set in the titular Babbdi, a city full of brutalist architecture. It is a platform game set in an open world. There are numerous tools across the world to traverse Babbdi, but the player can only hold one at once. The main objective is to obtain a train ticket and leave on the subway. This can be completed very quickly and requires little exploration or interaction with the city, leaving most of the game as optional content. Players are free to explore, speak to residents, and seek out collectibles for a trophy screen. Development The Lemaitre Bros released ''Babbdi'' on December 22, 2022. Multi-directional Shooter
Twin-stick shooter is a subgenre of shoot 'em up video games. It defines a multidirectional shooter in which the player character is controlled using two joysticks: the first for movement on a flat plane and the second to shoot in the direction the joystick is pushed. Usually shots are fired as soon as the second joystick is moved, but in some games there is an additional button which must be held. Keyboard and mouse or touch input may supplant one or both joysticks. A few games, such as 1981's ''Vanguard'', don't have a second joystick for shooting, but provide four buttons to fire in the cardinal directions. The twin-stick control scheme was used in arcade games starting with '' Gun Fight'' in 1975, but came into prominence with the high-action '' Robotron: 2084'' in 1982. ''Astro Battle'' is a science fiction multidirectional shooter developed and published by American studio Lava Lord Games for Microsoft Windows and Linux. The gameplay focuses on players designing star fighters to fight against other players' ships in an overhead melee. Development is continuous; New ships and weapons are continuously added, and a sequel to ''Astro Battle'' is available for beta testing. The basic gameplay in the sequel remains the same, and adds in-game tutorials, new design tools, a new 3D graphics engine, and support for Linux. ''AssaultCube'', formerly ''ActionCube'', is an open source first-person shooter video game, based on ''Cube'' and uses the same engine, the ''Cube Engine''. Although the main focus of ''AssaultCube'' is multiplayer online gaming, a single-player mode consists of computer-controlled bots. ''AssaultCube'' utilises efficient bandwidth usage, allowing the game to be run with connection speeds as low as 56kbit/s. It can run on older computer hardware as well. Thomas Biskup
''Ancient Domains of Mystery'' is a roguelike video game designed and developed by Thomas Biskup and released in 1994. The player's goal is to stop the forces of Chaos (cosmogony), Chaos that invade the world of Ancardia. The game has been identified as one of the "major roguelikes" by John Harris. Like the original roguelike games, ''Ancient Domains of Mystery'' uses ASCII graphics to represent the game world. A later version added the option to play with sound, Tile-based video game, tile-based graphics, and an overworld map. Most dungeons are procedurally generated, but once the game generates a dungeon, it does not change even if the player exits and re-enters it.
