Florida Scenic Highways are a collection of scenic highways in Florida organized and managed by the Florida Department of Transportation, through thFlorida Scenic Highways Program Each highway passes through or connects sites that the state of Florida determines to be of cultural, historic, archaeological, recreational, natural and/or scenic significance found along Florida's highway system. The State uses the scenic highway designations to promote resource preservation and enhancement, promote tourism and economic development, and educate travelers. Florida has 27 state-designated scenic byways. Florida State Road A1A
State Road A1A (SR A1A) is a major north–south Florida State Road that runs along the Atlantic Ocean, from Key West at the southern tip of Florida, to Fernandina Beach, just south of Georgia on Amelia Island. It is the main road through most oceanfront towns. Part of SR A1A is designated the A1A Scenic and Historic Coastal Byway, a National Scenic Byway. A portion of SR A1A that passes through Volusia County is designated the Ormond Scenic Loop and Trail, a Florida Scenic Highway. It is also called the Indian River Lagoon Scenic Highway from State Road 510 at Wabasso Beach to U.S. Route 1 in Cocoa. State Road 789 (SR 789) is a 17.5-mile-long road along the Florida’s Gulf Coast that spans Bird Key, St. Armands Key, and Lido Key, in Sarasota; Longboat Key (as Gulf of Mexico Drive); and Anna Maria Island. The southern terminus is the intersection of the John Ringling Causeway and the Tamiami Trail ( US 41- SR 45) in Sarasota; the northern terminus is the intersection of Gulf Drive, North and Manatee Avenue., West ( SR 64) in Holmes Beach. Bradenton Beach, Florida
Bradenton Beach is a city on Anna Maria Island in Manatee County, Florida, United States. The population was 908 at the 2020 census, down from 1,171 in 2010. It is part of the Bradenton-Sarasota-Venice, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city occupies the southern part of Anna Maria Island and is one of three municipalities on the island. The others are Holmes Beach in the center and Anna Maria in the north. History Pre-1950 1920s & 1930s Bradenton Beach was originally referred to as "Cortez Beach" since it was close to the community of Cortez. Construction on a wooden bridge to the mainland began in the summer of 1921. The 1921 Tampa Bay hurricane that October destroyed 80% of the bridge that was built up to that point. Longboat Key Bridge
A longboat is a type of ship's boat that was in use from ''circa'' 1500 or before. Though the Royal Navy replaced longboats with launches from 1780, examples can be found in merchant ships after that date. The longboat was usually the largest boat carried. In the early period of use, a ship's longboat was often so large that it could not be carried on board, and was instead towed. For instance, a survey of 1618 of Royal Navy ship's boats listed a 52 ft 4 in longboat used by the First Rate ''Prince'', a ship whose length of keel was 115 ft. This could lead to the longboat being lost in adverse weather. By the middle of the 17th century it became increasingly more common to carry the longboat on board, though not universally. In 1697 some British ships in chase of a French squadron cut adrift the longboats they were towing in an attempt to increase their speed and engage with the enemy. Florida State Road 267
State Road 267 (SR 267) is a north–south state route in the eastern Florida panhandle, west of Tallahassee. The route begins at U.S. Route 98 (US 98) in Newport and heads northwest as it crosses SR 363, passes Wakulla Springs, crosses US 319, and continues through the Apalachicola National Forest. It briefly joins with SR 20 to cross the Ochlockonee River, then splits to continue northward to Interstate 10 (I-10), US 90 in Quincy, and the Georgia state line, where it continues as State Route 302. Florida State Road 65
State Road 65 (SR 65) is a north–south route in the eastern panhandle, running from a junction with US 98/319 near Eastpoint northwards through the Apalachicola National Forest to SR 12 west of Quincy, near US 90. Route description The route begins at US 98/319 in Green Point, a rural community east of Eastpoint on the Gulf of Mexico in Franklin County, Florida. For the road's first it runs straight north, and after this curves to the northwest. From here the road becomes North Shore Bay Road and winds around the southern border of the Tates Hell Swamp. As the road enters Beverly, it faces an at-grade crossing with an Apalachicola Northern Railroad line and then curves straight north again where it enters Apalachicola National Forest.
