Faroese Women
Women in the Faroe Islands are European women who live in or are from the Faroe Islands, a north Atlantic island group and archipelago that is under the sovereignty of the Denmark, Kingdom of Denmark. Traditionally, Faroese women have a high standing in the society of Faroe Islanders. Legally, women of the Faroe Islands share equality with men. During the late 19th century, women in the Faroe Islands became wage-earners by participating in jobs such as fish processing and by becoming teachers. In 1915, they obtained women's suffrage. Eventually, Faroe Islander women were able to hold Politics of the Faroe Islands, governmental positions. Malla Samuelsen
Malene (Malla) Sofie Samuelsen née Poulsen (11 July 1909 – 29 November 1997) was a Faroese politician and feminist who became the first woman to sit in the Løgting, the Faroese parliament, when she served for a short period as a substitute in 1964. She was also one of the founders of the Faroese Women's Association (''Kvinnufelagið''), frequently serving as its chair. Biography Born on 11 July 1909 in Kirkja on the easterly island of Fugloy, Malene Sofie Poulsen was the daughter of the fisherman Petur Pauli Poulsen (1881–1957) and his wife Susanne Elisabeth Zachariasen (1885–1919). One of seven children, after her mother died when she was eight, she was brought up by her maternal grandparents. Her grandfather, Símun Mikkjal Zachariasen, was a poet, politician and schoolteacher who played an active part in Faroese cultural life. Andrea Árting
Andrea Súsanna Árting née Rasmussen (1891–1988) was a Faroese politician and trade union leader. A supporter of self-government, she is remembered as one of the most active figures in the labour movement, heading the ''Havnar Arbejðskvinnufelag'' (Tórshavn Working Women's Association) for almost 40 years. Biography Born out of marriage on 23 December 1891 in Tórshavn, Andrea Súsanna Rasmussen was the daughter of Jacob Johansen and Susanne Rasmussen. She was brought up by her maternal aunt and uncle, Kathrine Malene Rasmussen and Elias Johansen, in the Rættará district of the capital. Johansen was a boat builder who had been active in politics. After finishing school, Árting worked in dried fish production and in a fish shop. When 17, she caught tuberculosis and spent a couple of years in a sanatorium. Annika Olsen
Annika Olsen (born 13 March 1975, in Tórshavn, grew up in Vágur) is a Faroese politician, high school teacher and former swimmer. She was Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Social Affairs in the Faroe Islands (2011–15) and Minister of Internal Affairs from 2008 to 2011 representing the People's Party (Faroe Islands). Before that she was a member of the City Council of Tórshavn from 2004 to 2008. Annika Olsen has an MA in Nordic languages and literature with a supplementary subject in religion. She is the daughter of Jákup Olsen, a businessman, former politician and former headmaster of Vágur's School and Marna Olsen, born Holm, a retired teacher. Folketing
The Folketing ( da, Folketinget, ; ), also known as the Parliament of Denmark or the Danish Parliament in English, is the unicameral national legislature (parliament) of the Kingdom of Denmark—Denmark proper together with the Faroe Islands and Greenland. Established in 1849, until 1953 the Folketing was the lower house of a bicameral parliament, called the Rigsdag; the upper house was Landstinget. It meets in Christiansborg Palace, on the islet of Slotsholmen in central Copenhagen. The Folketing passes all laws, approves the cabinet, and supervises the work of the government. Marita Petersen
Marita Petersen () (née Johansen (); 21 October 1940 – 26 August 2001) was the first and to date only female Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands and the first female speaker of the Løgting (Parliament). She was elected to the Løgting in 1988 for Javnaðarflokkurin (The Social Democratic Party). In January 1993, she was elected to the post of Prime Minister which she held until September 1994. Later, she became chairman of the parliament from 1994 to 1995. She was Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands in a very difficult time with economic crisis. Marita Petersen died of cancer in 2001. Jóngerð Purkhús
Jóngerð Jensina Purkhús (born 1937) is a Faroese politician and feminist who has been an active member of the Republic Party. She became the first female minister in the Faroe Islands when she was appointed Minister of Finance, Economy and the Environment in 1985. In 1989, she was appointed Minister of the Economy, Social Affairs and the Judiciary, serving until 1991. Biography Born in Klaksvik on 22 January 1937, Jóngerð Jensina Purkhús is the daughter of Jacob Pauli Purkhús (1908–90), a fisherman, and his wife Else Johanne Hansen (born 1912). Her family were not academically inclined but they were politically attached to the social and political ambitions of the Republic Party which sought independence from Denmark. Social Democratic Party (Faroe Islands)
The Social Democratic Party ( fo, Javnaðarflokkurin, lit=Equality Party, JF) is a social-democratic political party on the Faroe Islands, led by Aksel V. Johannesen. History The Social Democratic Party was founded on 25 September 1925 by members of Faroese trade unions. Its youth organization '' Sosialistiskt Ungmannafelag'' (Socialist Youth) was founded in 1965. At the 2004 general election on 20 January 2004, the party received 21.8% of the popular vote and therefore won 7 out of 33 seats in the Løgting. At the 2008 general election on 19 January 2008, the party received 19.3% of the popular vote and therefore won 6 out of 33 seats. In the 2011 election for the Danish Folketing, the party improved its vote share to 21.0%, and took one of the two Faroese seats previously held by Republic.
