FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2023
The 47th FIS Alpine World Ski Championships took place from 6 to 19 February 2023 in two neighboring locations in the French Alps, Courchevel and Méribel. The location was decided in May 2018 during the 51st FIS Congress in Costa Navarino (Greece), where Courchevel-Méribel won against Austrian Saalbach-Hinterglemm with 9 to 6 votes. The same two towns already hosted parts of the 1992 Winter Olympic Games. In Courchevel, ski jumping and the Nordic combination took place, and Méribel was the location for the women's alpine skiing. Bidding In 2015, upon a request by the Fédération Française de Ski (FFS), Courchevel, Méribel and Val d'Isère drew up proposals to organize a ski world championship in France. In January 2016, the FFS then chose the joint bid of Courchevel and Méribel. On 24 January 2017, the bid of the two alpine resorts was submitted to the FIS. Courchevel
Courchevel () is a French Alps ski resort. It is a part of Les Trois Vallées, the largest linked ski areas in the world. Courchevel also refers to the towns of Courchevel 1300 (Le Praz), Courchevel 1550, Courchevel 1650 (Moriond), and Courchevel 1850, which are named for their altitudes in metres. On 1 January 2017, Saint-Bon-Tarentaise (1100) merged into the new commune Courchevel. The resort centre of Courchevel is at 1,747 metres (5,732 ft). The name Courchevel 1850 was chosen for marketing reasons to compete with rival ski resort Val d'Isère. It is the Jardin Alpin area of Courchevel 1850 rather than the centre which is located at 1,850 metres (6,070 ft). Location Courchevel used to be part of the commune of Saint-Bon-Tarentaise, but in 2017 that was merged with La Perrière into the new commune of Courchevel. Val-d'Isère
Val-d'Isère (, literally ''Valley of Isère'') is a commune of the Tarentaise Valley, in the Savoie department (Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region) in southeastern France. It lies from the border with Italy. It is on the border of the Vanoise National Park created in 1963. During the Albertville 1992 Winter Olympics, the ''Face de Bellevarde'' was the site of the men's downhill race. Other alpine skiing events held during those games included men's giant slalom and alpine combined. Val d'Isère regularly hosts World Cup alpine events, usually for the men in early December, and hosted the World Championships in 2009. It is located in the Savoie région with good transport links in and out of Lyon, Geneva and Chambéry. Marco Schwarz
Career Schwarz competed for Austria at the 2012 Winter Youth Olympics in the alpine skiing and won three gold medals; in the boys' combined, the parallel mixed team event, and the boys' giant slalom. Schwarz made his World Cup debut in November 2014 at age 19. Loïc Meillard
Loïc Meillard (born 29 October 1996) is a Swiss World Cup alpine ski racer and specializes in the technical events of slalom and giant slalom. Born in Neuchâtel, Meillard made his World Cup debut in January 2015; his younger sister Mélanie is also a World Cup alpine racer. Career Meillard made his World Cup debut at age 18 in the Adelboden giant slalom in January 2015. At the Junior World Championships that March at Hafjell, Norway, he won a bronze medal in the super-G, silver in the giant slalom, and gold in the combined. Alexis Pinturault
Alexis Pinturault () (born 20 March 1991) is a French World Cup alpine ski racer and Olympic medalist. With 34 World Cup victories, Pinturault is the most successful French skier in World Cup history. He represented France at six World Championships and three Winter Olympics, with four bronze medals in the giant slalom. He was the overall World Cup champion in 2021. Pinturault was the world champion in combined in 2019, the world champion in the team event in 2017, and a two-time world junior champion in giant slalom in 2009 and 2011. James Crawford (alpine Skier)
James "Jack" Crawford (born 3 May 1997) is a Canadian World Cup alpine ski racer. He specializes in super-G, and also competes in giant slalom, downhill, and combined. Crawford made his World Cup debut in January 2016 in a super-G at Kitzbühel, Austria. He competed in the 2018 Winter Olympics, and the World Championships in 2019 and 2021, where he was fourth in the combined event. At the 2023 World Championships in Courchevel, Crawford won his first gold medal in Super-G. In January 2022, Crawford was named to Canada's Olympic team; he was fourth in the downhill, sixth in the super-G, and won the bronze medal in the combined.
