EyeSteelFilm is a Montreal-based Canada, Canadian Film, cinema production company co-founded by Daniel Cross (filmmaker), Daniel Cross and Mila Aung-Thwin, dedicated to socially engaged cinema, bringing social and political change through cinematic expression. RoachTrip
''RoachTrip'' is a 2003 Canadian documentary about two punks, Roach and his friend Smash down the invisible punk highway across Canada. It captures their goal to escape the streets of Montreal as they cross to reach the "promised land" of British Columbia's Okanagan Valley. The film is an autobiographical coming-of-age chronicle told in an intimate point-of-view style, directed by Eric "Roach" Denis of EyeSteelFilm, a Montreal-based documentary production company, as a continuation of the autobiographical journey that he had started by being portrayed as one of the main characters in Daniel Cross award-winning documentary '' S.P.I.T.: Squeegee Punks in Traffic'' where Eric Denis contributed with his RoachCam. Punk The Vote!
''Punk the Vote!'' (in French ''Punk le vote!'') is a 73-minute 2006 Canadian documentary about the Canadian elections, and a hilarious and at the same time a critical take on Canadian politics punk-rock style, when two punks decide to run as independent candidates for the Canadian elections. The film is directed by Eric "Roach" Denis of EyeSteelFilm, a Montreal-based documentary production company. It was produced by EyeSteelFilm in association with Canal D Canadian specialty channel specializing in documentaries. Mila Aung-Thwin
Mila Aung-Thwin is a Canadian documentary filmmaker, producer and activist whose films deal with social justice. He had a multi-disciplinary education in arts, journalism, and photography. In 1998, he met his fellow director/producer Daniel Cross and co-founded with him EyeSteelFilm specializing in making documentaries. He is the vice-president of the company. He is a graduate of Vanier College and McGill University in 1998. He was an editor of the McGill Daily during his studies. Career Aung-Thwin, an award-winning director made the films Chairman George on the stations CTV, BBC's Storyville and TV 2 (Denmark). as a co-director to Daniel Cross. Another co-direction with Cross was Too Colourful for the League, Gemini-nominated TV documentary examining the struggle of blacks in ice hockey from the 1930s to the present day telling the story of black players' courage and determination to play in a white-dominated sport. Inside Lara Roxx
''Inside Lara Roxx'' is a 2011 EyeSteelFilm Canadian documentary film by Canadian film director Mia Donovan. It covers the circumstances of a 21-year-old Canadian woman Lara Roxx who in the Spring of 2004, left her hometown Montreal heading to Los Angeles to work in pornography. Within two months she contracted HIV after shooting an unprotected sex scene with two males. It was revealed that one of the two males, porn actor Darren James, was HIV positive. The film did well critically. In 2012, it was nominated for a Claude Jutra Award for Best Documentary. Synopsis The film's director Mia Donovan documents Roxx's life in the 5-year period following her diagnosis. Donovan meets her in a psychiatric ward in Montreal suffering from bipolar disorder. It won the Best Documentary Feature at 2009 IDFA and has been distributed by Zeitgeist Films in the US. Synopsis Every spring, China's 130 million migrant workers travel back to their home villages for the New Year's holiday. This exodus is the world's largest human migration. Working over several years, director Lixin Fan travelled with one couple who has embarked on these annual treks for almost two decades. Daniel Cross (filmmaker)
Daniel Cross a Canadian documentary filmmaker, producer and activist whose films deal with social justice. Cross is co-founder and president of EyeSteelFilm with fellow director/producer Mila Aung-Thwin. He is also founder of Homeless Nation, a non-profit internet endeavor that started in 2006 and has become a Canadian national collective voice by and for Canada's homeless population. Cross is a professor at the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema, Concordia University, Montreal Education Cross is a graduate of Concordia University, BFA 91, MFA 98. Eric Denis better known as Eric "Roach" Denis is a Canadian documentary film maker and activist whose films deal with social justice, and particularly homelessness. Earlier Life Denis was born in Grenville, Quebec. At age 9, his parents divorced and he went on to live with his mother in Hawkesbury, Ontario. After a brief stay with his father, he was put in a juvenile detention centre because he had been hooked on smoking marijuana. At the age of 14, he escaped from the center he was assigned to and started living as a street kid in the streets of Montreal acquiring addiction to hard drugs in the process as a teenager. Denis assuming the pseudonym "Roach" became a squeegee teenager sleeping in parks, abandoned cars and refuge centers and was arrested many times. Mia Donovan
Mia Donovan is a Canadian photographer and filmmaker. She is best known for her documentary '' Inside Lara Roxx'' released through EyeSteelFilm about 21-year-old Canadian Lara Roxx who in the spring of 2004, left her hometown Montreal heading to Los Angeles for working in pornography and within two months contracted HIV after shooting an unprotected sex scene with two males. Donovan followed Lara Roxx through 5 years of Roxx's attempt to build a new identity and find hope in the wake of her past. Her film won "Best Documentary on Society and Humanity" at the 2011 Guangzhou International Documentary Film Festival and it was runner-up for "Best Feature at 2012 Boston Underground Film Festival. Music For A Blue Train
''Music for a Blue Train'' is a 48-minute 2003 documentary about busker musicians in the Montreal Metro subway train system. It was written and directed by Mila Aung-Thwin of EyeSteelFilm and produced by Germaine Ying Gee Wong for the National Film Board of Canada. A harmonica player known as Bad News Brown (real name Paul Frappier) acts as an impromptu host in the documentary bringing the viewers snippets of the lives of musicians in Montreal's subway system – The Metro – run by Société de transport de Montréal (STM) that gives around 60 spots on a first-come, first-served basis, provided the musician-busker registers his name early enough as soon as the Metro opens to the public and returns during his assigned time to perform for an hour or two, amidst indifference from most passersby or, at times, a token word of encouragement.
