Esmonde Higgins
Esmonde Macdonald Higgins (26 March 1897 - 25 December 1960) was an Australian political activist and adult education proponent. He was a prominent figure in the early years of the Communist Party of Australia, serving as editor of its official newspaper and running its agitprop department. However, he later became disillusioned with the party and concentrated on his work with the Workers' Educational Association (WEA). Early life Higgins was born on 26 March 1897 in Malvern, Victoria. He was the second of the six surviving children of Catherine (née McDonald) and John Higgins. His sister Nettie Palmer became a prominent literary critic. Their father, an accountant, was born in Ireland, as were his siblings H. B. Higgins, who served on the High Court of Australia, and Ina Higgins, a landscape architect. Sir Anthony Esmonde, 15th Baronet
Sir Anthony Charles Esmonde, 15th Baronet (18 January 1899 – 17 March 1981) was an Irish Fine Gael politician, medical doctor and farmer. Early and personal life He was born on 18 January 1899, at Ashlett House, Church Stretton, Shropshire, the youngest son among the three sons and three daughters of John Joseph Esmonde and his first wife, Rose (née Magennis). He was educated in Germany, at Clongowes Wood College, and at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. After qualifying in 1921 he served as surgeon-lieutenant in the Royal Navy from 1921 to 1925. Thereafter he practised medicine successively in Nenagh, County Tipperary, and Gorey, County Wexford. Politics Esmomde first stood for Dáil Éireann as a Fine Gael candidate for the Tipperary constituency at the 1943 general election, but was unsuccessful. Eugene Esmonde
Lieutenant Commander Eugene Esmonde, (1 March 1909 – 12 February 1942) was a distinguished Irish pilot in the Fleet Air Arm who was a posthumous recipient of the Victoria Cross (VC), the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy awarded to members of Commonwealth forces. Esmonde earned this award while in command of a British Fleet Air Arm torpedo bomber squadron in the Second World War. Sir John Lymbrick Esmonde, 14th Baronet (15 December 1893 – 6 July 1958) was an Irish nationalist politician who served as Member of Parliament (MP) in the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1915 to 1918 and later as a Teachta Dála (TD) in Dáil Éireann from 1937 to 1944, and again from 1948 to 1951. Sir John Henry Grattan Esmonde, 16th Baronet, of the Esmonde baronets, (27 June 1928 – 16 May 1987) was an Irish Fine Gael politician. A Senior Counsel by profession, Esmonde was elected to Dáil Éireann as a Fine Gael Teachta Dála (TD) for the Wexford constituency at the 1973 general election. He lost his seat at the 1977 general election. The outgoing Government appointed him as a judge of the Circuit Court. He was assigned to the Western Circuit, and served as the Circuit judge there until his death. Sir Laurence Esmonde, 1st Baron Esmonde (1570?–1646), was an Irish peer who held office as governor of the fort of Duncannon in County Wexford. He was a leading Irish Royalist commander in the English Civil War, but was later suspected of disloyalty to the English Crown when he surrendered Duncannon Fort to the enemy. He was the ancestor of the Esmonde Baronets, although the barony died with him. Early life Esmonde was the second son of Walter Esmonde of Johnstown, Wexford, and his wife Margaret, daughter of Michael Furlong of Horetown. He converted to Protestantism in his twenties and served with credit against Spain in the Low Countries. In 1599, he was appointed to the command of 150 foot soldiers and was actively engaged during the rebellion of Hugh O'Neill; it appears from a letter of his to Lord Shrewsbury that he endeavoured to procure the assassination or banishment of O'Neill, but in this he was unsuccessful. Sir Osmond Thomas Grattan Esmonde, 12th Baronet (4 April 1896 – 22 July 1936) was an Irish diplomat and Cumann na nGaedheal (and later Fine Gael) politician. He was born in Ballynastragh, Gorey, County Wexford in 1896, the eldest son of Sir Thomas Esmonde. He was educated at Mount St Benedict School in Gorey; and the Downside School. He attended Balliol College, Oxford and University College Dublin, though he did not graduate from either. After the 1916 Easter Rising, he joined Sinn Féin and campaigned at the 1918 general election for Roger Sweetman in Wexford North, even though his father was the sitting MP and Irish Parliamentary Party candidate.
