Dolichopodidae
Dolichopodidae, the long-legged flies, are a large, cosmopolitan family of true flies with more than 7,000 described species in about 230 genera. The genus ''Dolichopus'' is the most speciose, with some 600 species. Dolichopodidae generally are small flies with large, prominent eyes and a metallic cast to their appearance, though there is considerable variation among the species. Most have long legs, though some do not. In many species, the males have unusually large genitalia which are taxonomically useful in identifying species. Most adults are predatory on other small animals, though some may scavenge or act as kleptoparasites of spiders or other predators. An expanded concept of the family (Dolichopodidae ''sensu lato'') includes the subfamilies Parathalassiinae and Microphorinae. Enlinia
''Enlinia'' is a genus of flies in the family Dolichopodidae. Flies in the genus are tiny, with a body length of around 1 mm. The genus is restricted to the New World. There are about 89 species described in the genus. The genus was originally known as ''Collinellula'', named by John Merton Aldrich in 1932. It was named in honor of J. E. Collin, who collected a specimen of the type species, ''Collinellula magistri'' (the specific name was also chosen to celebrate the ability of this collector). However, ''Collinellula'' was found to be preoccupied, so the genus was renamed to ''Enlinia'' by Aldrich in 1933, in honor of G. Enderlein, another collector of the type species. Haromyia
''Haromyia'' is a genus of flies in the family Dolichopodidae. It contains only one species, ''Haromyia iviei'', known from Dominica. Flies in the genus and species have a small body size measuring between 1.0 to 1.5 mm in length, a bulging clypeus with six large setae, and wing veins that are nearly straight and evenly diverge from the base of the wing to the tip. The genus does not currently fit into any established subfamily, although it superficially resembles both the Enliniinae and Achalcinae. The genus is named after the botanist and entomologist Harold E. Robinson Harold Ernest Robinson (May 22, 1932 – December 17, 2020) was an American botanist and entomologist. John Merton Aldrich
John Merton Aldrich (January 28, 1866 – May 27, 1934) was an American entomologist. Aldrich was the Associate Curator of Insects at the United States National Museum. He is considered one of the most prolific entomologists in the study of flies. Biography John Merton Aldrich was born in Rochester, Minnesota on January 28, 1866. When he was fifteen, he moved with his family to a farm in South Dakota. He enrolled at South Dakota State University and graduated in 1888, one year early because the university president wanted to have a graduating class that year. He studied entomology briefly under Otto Lugger at the University of Minnesota and then started working at the South Dakota State Agricultural Experiment Station with the understanding that he would continue to study entomology in the winter.
