''Electronic Games'' was the first dedicated video game magazine published in the United States and ran from October 15, 1981, to 1997 under different titles. It was co-founded by Bill Kunkel, Joyce Worley, and Arnie Katz. History The history of ''Electronic Games'' originates in the consumer electronics magazine, ''Video''. Initially video games were covered sporadically in Deeny Kaplan's regular "VideoTest Reports" column. In the summer of 1979, ''Video'' decided to launch a new column to focus on video games. '' Arcade Alley'' became a regular column and would represent a journalistic first. Written by Bill Kunkel, Arnie Katz (initially pseudonymously writing as Frank T. Laney II), and Joyce Worley, the three writers became close friends and in 1981 they founded ''Electronic Games'' magazine. Bill Kunkel (journalist)
Bill Kunkel (July 21, 1950 – September 4, 2011) was a graphic novelist as well as pioneering professional wrestling and video game journalist and Video game criticism, critic from the 1970s until his death in the early 2010s. During his time working with the video game industry, Kunkel authored numerous strategy guides, co-designed several video games, served as an expert witness in three court cases, and taught courses in Game Design for the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). Kunkel served as the executive editor of ''Electronic Games Magazine'' and the editor-in-chief of ''Tips & Tricks'' magazine, writing columns and comics for several magazines and game sites. He often wrote under nicknames, the most common of which were "The Game Doctor" (for video game topics), and "Potshot" (for professional wrestling topics). ''Basketball'' is a sports video game programmed by Alan Miller for the Atari Video Computer System (later renamed to the Atari 2600) and published by Atari, Inc. in 1978. The cartridge presents a game of one-on-one basketball and can be played by one or two players, one of the few early VCS titles to have a single-player mode with an AI-controlled opponent. Miller wrote a version of ''Basketball'' for Atari 8-bit computers with improved graphics, published in 1979. The Magnavox Odyssey 2 (stylized as Magnavox Odyssey2), also known as Philips Odyssey 2, is a home video game console of the second generation that was released in 1978. ''Air-Sea Battle'' is a fixed shooter developed and published by Atari, Inc. for the Atari Video Computer System (Atari VCS). The game was designed by Larry Kaplan who joined Atari in 1976.
