Elections In Northern Cyprus
Elections in Northern Cyprus are organized to elect governments, presidents and representatives of local administrative bodies in Northern Cyprus, known as the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Electoral system The presidency, which is served in five-year terms, was instituted with TRNC's first presidential election in 1985 and continued with the elections of 1990, 1995, 2000 and 2005,2010 with the next election scheduled for April 2015. The legislature, Cumhuriyet Meclisi ( Assembly of the Republic of Northern Cyprus), has 50 members, elected for a five-year term by mitigated proportional representation. The territory has a multi-party system, with two or three strong parties and another party which is also electorally successful. In the presidential election, a candidate must obtain at least 50% of the votes in order to secure a first-ballot victory. Mustafa Akıncı
Mustafa Akıncı (; born 28 December 1947) is a Turkish Cypriot politician who was the president of Northern Cyprus from April 2015 until October 2020. An architect by profession, Akıncı in 1976 became the first elected mayor of the Nicosia Turkish Municipality in Northern Cyprus, at the age of 28. He defeated a candidate endorsed by President Rauf Denktaş as the candidate of the Communal Liberation Party (TKP). He held this position for an uninterrupted term of 14 years until 1990, leading several projects for the city that won him international awards including the Aga Khan Award for Architecture and collaborating with his Greek Cypriot counterpart. Mehmet Ali Talat
Mehmet Ali Talat (born 6 July 1952) is a Turkish Cypriot politician who served as the president of Northern Cyprus from 2005 to 2010. Talat was the leader of the social democratic Republican Turkish Party ( tr, Cumhuriyetçi Türk Partisi, CTP), from 1996 to 2005 and 2015 to 2016. Communal Liberation Party New Forces
Communal Liberation Party New Forces ( tr, Toplumcu Kurtuluş Partisi Yeni Güçler, TKP-YG) is a centre-left political party in Northern Cyprus. It is led by Mehmet Çakıcı. It was founded in 2016 after a group headed by Çakıcı broke off from the Communal Democracy Party (TDP). Çakıcı and former MP Mustafa Emiroğluları resigned from the TDP on 25 November 2016. This was followed by the resignation of 70 other members of the TDP, mostly originating from the historical Communal Liberation Party (TKP), on 28 November 2016. The rationale given for these resignations was what they saw as "undemocratic" policies employed by the TDP leadership under Cemal Özyiğit and "the restriction of the freedom of speech within the party" after an election for the head of the Güzelyurt District. Communal Democracy Party
The Communal Democracy Party ( tr, Toplumcu Demokrasi Partisi, TDP) is a social-democratic political party in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The party came into being in May 2007 as a merger of the Peace and Democracy Movement with the Communal Liberation Party. At the 2009 legislative elections for the Assembly of the Republic in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, the TDP, in its first elections, won 2 out of 50 seats and 6.87% of the popular vote. In 2013, it took part in the interim Siber cabinet with three ministers. At the 2013 legislative elections, the party increased its share of the vote to 7.41% and its number of MPs to 3. The People's Party ( tr, Halkın Partisi, HP) is a political party in Northern Cyprus, founded on 6 January 2016. The party has stated its aims as erasing the old political system based on corruption, and the good administration of Northern Cyprus. Its leader is Kudret Özersay and its secretary general is Ahmet Tokatlıoğlu. It first gained representation in the parliament in the 2018 elections. The party has a different organization from all other political parties in Northern Cyprus. It has no women's or youth wings, with the stated aim of directly integrating women and youth into its administration. Serdar Denktaş is son of Rauf Denktaş, the former President of the de facto Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. He was the Minister of Finance of Northern Cyprus from April 2016 to May 2019. The Rebirth Party ( tr, Yeniden Doğuş Partisi, YDP) is a political party in Northern Cyprus. It was founded on 7 October 2016. Its leader is Erhan Arıklı, a professor, and its Secretary General is Turan Büyükyılmaz.
