East Carolina Pirates Football Seasons
This is a list of football seasons completed by the East Carolina Pirates since the team's creation in 1932 under Coach Kenneth Beatty. Since that first season, the Pirates have played over 800 regular-season games and 20 bowl games. Historically, East Carolina has seen moderate success. While East Carolina's first ten years of football included only three winning seasons, the team has recorded one undefeated season and a share of the Small College National Championship in 1941, along with several one-loss seasons since their early struggles. Football was called off for the 1942, 1943, and 1944 seasons due to World War II. After the three-season hiatus, the Pirates joined the North State Conference. East Carolina won its first championship—the North State Conference championship—in 1953. AP Poll
The Associated Press poll (AP poll) provides weekly rankings of the top 25 NCAA teams in one of three Division I college sports: football, men's basketball and women's basketball. The rankings are compiled by polling 62 sportswriters and broadcasters from across the nation. Each voter provides their own ranking of the top 25 teams, and the individual rankings are then combined to produce the national ranking by giving a team 25 points for a first place vote, 24 for a second place vote, and so on down to 1 point for a twenty-fifth place vote. Ballots of the voting members in the AP poll are made public. Ed Emory
Edward Harrell Emory Sr. (April 14, 1937 – January 4, 2013) was an American football player and coach. He became East Carolina University's 14th head football coach in 1980. In 1983, he guided the Pirates to an 8–3 record and a #20 ranking in the Associated Press final national poll. His three losses came at the hands of Florida State, Florida, and Miami (Florida). The football team lost by a combined score of 13 points. Before coaching, Emory went to school at East Carolina College and was a three-year varsity letter winner and was third-team All-American in his senior year. He was inducted into the ECU Hall of Fame in 2003. Emory returned to coaching at the high school level and served as head coach of the perennial North Carolina powerhouse, Richmond Senior High School in Rockingham, North Carolina, from 2001 to 2006, compiling at 77–7 record in that six-year span. 1980 NCAA Division I-A Football Season
The 1980 NCAA Division I-A football season saw a university from the state of Georgia take its first national title since 1942. Nine days following the bowl games to close the 1979 season, tragedy struck when new LSU coach Bo Rein died when the plane he was flying in crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Virginia. Rein, who coached North Carolina State to the Atlantic Coast Conference championship in 1979, was named on November 30 of that year as the successor to Charles McClendon, who coached LSU to a 137–59–7 mark from 1962 through 1979. Jerry Stovall, a former LSU All-American and St. Louis Cardinals defensive back, was named to succeed Rein approximately 36 hours after the crash. Patrick Fain Dye (November 6, 1939 – June 1, 2020) was an American football player, coach, and college athletics administrator. He served as the head football coach at East Carolina University (1974–1979), the University of Wyoming (1980), and Auburn University (1981–1992) compiling a career college football record of 153–62–5. He served as the Athletic Director at Auburn from 1981 to 1991 and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach in 2005. On November 19, 2005, the playing field in the stadium at Auburn University was named 'Pat Dye Field' in his honor. Playing career Pat Dye played high school football at Richmond Academy in Augusta, Georgia, from 1954-1956 where he was selected All-American and All-State while leading the team to the 1956 3A state championship, serving as team captain.
