Alfred Dunhill
Alfred Dunhill (30 September 1872 – 2 January 1959) was an English tobacconist, entrepreneur and inventor. He is the progenitor of Alfred Dunhill, Ltd. a London-based luxury goods company owned by Swiss company Richemont and the Dunhill tobacco products company owned by British American Tobacco (now two independently owned entities). From 1893 Dunhill ran a company selling motoring accessories, and in 1902 opened a shop in Mayfair. He developed a pipe designed for motorists in 1904. He opened a tobacconist's shop in St James's in 1907, offering tailored tobacco blends. Shops were opened in New York and Paris in the 1920s. With his international ambitions, Dunhill helped to create the modern luxury goods market. He retired from business in 1929, and married his mistress in 1945, following the death of his wife. Alison Dunhill
Alison Dunhill (born 1950) is an English artist and art historian, and also a published poet. Biography Born in London, Dunhill trained in Fine Art at the University of Reading under Sir Terry Frost and Rita Donagh. In the early 1970s she had a studio in Florence where she associated with some of the key figures in the Situationist International, including philosopher and filmmaker Guy Debord, the writer Gianfranco Sanguinetti and, later, the novelist and critic Michèle Bernstein. She presented some of her recollections of that time to an audience in Rio de Janeiro in 2015. Artistic career Dunhill was primarily a landscape painter in her earlier career, and later explored more abstract and semi-sculptural forms, including mixed media artworks inspired by the surrealist ideas of chance and the found object. Thomas Frederick Dunhill (1 February 187713 March 1946) was a prolific English composer in many genres, though he is best known today for his light music and educational piano works. His compositions include much chamber music, a song cycle, ''The Wind Among the Reeds'', and an operetta, '' Tantivy Towers'', that had a successful London run in 1931. He was also a teacher, examiner and writer on musical subjects. Dunhill () is a village, townland and civil parish in County Waterford, Ireland. It comprises a church, a primary school, a parish hall, a public house and shop. An enterprise park called Dunhill Ecopark was established in 2000 by members of the Dunhill community. Religion Sacred Heart is the third church to have been built on the current site. The first structure was erected in 1798 after an old building in the townland of Shanaclune was abandoned. Education Established in the year 2000, Dunhill Ecopark is an adult educational enterprise park whose mission is to cultivate an entrepreneurial culture and facilitate job creation. The term Dunhill cigar refers to a Cuban-made cigar produced for and offered by Alfred Dunhill of London under its own varying brand names spanning several eras, as well as special lines made up of cigars produced by prestigious Cuban makers offered only by Dunhill. The first Dunhill branded cigars were its ''Selección Supremas'' of the early 20th century, a line with various sizes made by Cuban cigar makers such as Montecristo and Romeo y Julieta. Dunhill also offered brands such as Don Cándido. After the Cuban Revolution, Dunhill was given the exclusive rights to three Cuban brands by the government-owned tobacco monopoly, Cubatabaco: Don Cándido, its own Don Alfredo, and La Flor del Punto, plus the numerous Selección Suprema sizes produced by the Cuban marques that had survived nationalization. The brand name commemorates the English tobacconist, entrepreneur and inventor Alfred Dunhill. In the United Kingdom, Dunhill is registered and manufactured in Westminster, City of Westminster, London. Dunhill Records was started in 1964 by Lou Adler, Jay Lasker, Pierre Cossette and Bobby Roberts as Dunhill Productions to release the music of Johnny Rivers on Imperial Records. It became a record label the following year and was distributed by ABC Records. The first Dunhill single was "My Prayer/Pretty Please" (catalog #D-4001) by Shelley Fabares, who was married to Adler at the time. In the summer of 1967 Adler sold his shares to ABC Records, creating ABC-Dunhill Records, after which he started yet another label Ode Records (which was first distributed by CBS and later by A&M Records). Until 1975, ABC continued to release records on the Dunhill label, after which all remaining artists were absorbed into the ABC Records roster before MCA Records bought the label outright in 1979. The Alfred Dunhill Cup was a team golf tournament which ran from 1985 to 2000, sponsored by Alfred Dunhill Ltd. It was for three-man teams of professional golfers, one team representing each country, and was promoted as the "World Team Championship". It was a "special approved event" on the European Tour, which means that it was supported by the Tour, but the prize money did not count towards the Tour's Order of Merit. The host course was the Old Course at St Andrews in Scotland. The stature of the members of the American team was variable as the Dunhill Cup clashed with a PGA Tour event, though the fact that it was played at "The Home of Golf" helped to attract some star names. The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship is one of the richest golf tournaments on the European Tour. It is played in September, on three different links courses, centred on the "home of golf", St Andrews in Fife, Scotland. The tournament is a pro-am, with the format based on the long-running United States PGA Tour's AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am held annually since 1937 (except during the Second World War), where each team consists of one amateur and one professional. The three course rotation consists of The Old Course at St Andrews, Carnoustie Golf Links and Kingsbarns Golf Links. The Dunhill Trio was an American popular dance team of the 20th century. They were called by other names such as the Three Dunhills and the Dunhill Dance Team. The Dunhill Trio were Bob Roberts, Lou Spencer and Art Stanley. Lou Spencer is the father of singer Vicki Spencer. The trio was active in the late 1940s, 1950s, and early 1960s.
