Dukes Of Gramont
The title of Duke of Gramont (''duc de Gramont'') is a French dukedom and former peerage. It was created in 1648 for French Marshal Antoine III de Gramont. History The family of Gramont was a Navarrese medieval noble house and owned the chateau of Bidache. They held land in Lower Navarre and in neighbouring Gascony, part of the kingdom of France. As their liege lords, the kings of Navarre, they played an active role in French politics. The last heiress of the house, Claire de Gramont (died in 1534) wed Menaut d'Aure and their son Antoine took the name Gramont rather than d'Aure. Antoine de Gramont was a leading noblemen in south-west France during the Wars of Religion. At first, a Calvinist and lieutenant general to Queen Jeanne d'Albret, he switched sides to Catholicism and King Charles IX's service. He was created Count of Guiche in 1563. Philibert, Count de Gramont (1621 – 31 January 1707), was a French courtier and soldier, known as the protagonist of the ''Mémoires'' written by Anthony Hamilton (his brother-in-law). He was a younger half-brother of Antoine III of Gramont and uncle of Catherine Charlotte de Gramont, princess of Monaco. Birth and origins Philibert was born in 1621, probably at the Château de Bidache, the second son of Antoine II de Gramont and his second wife, Claude de Montmorency-Bouteville. Armand Antoine Agénor de Gramont, 12th Duc de Gramont (29 September 1879 – 2 August 1962) was a French nobleman, scientist and industrialist. He was known by the courtesy title of Duc de Guiche until 1925, when he succeeded his father as Duc de Gramont. He was the eldest son of Antoine Alfred Agénor de Gramont, 11e duc de Gramont and Marguerite de Rothschild. Antoine IX Geneviève Héraclius Agénor de Gramont (17 July 1789 – 3 March 1855), 9th Duke of Gramont, Duke of Guiche, Prince of Bidache, ''etc.'' was a 19th-century French aristocratic Army general and courtier. Antoine-Louis-Marie de Gramont, 8th Duke of Gramont (17 August 1755 – 28 August 1836), was a French military officer, diplomat and parliamentarian. Life and career He was known by the courtesy title of ''comte de Louvigny'' before his marriage, on 16 April 1780, to Aglaé de Polignac (1768–1803), daughter of Yolande de Polastron, Duchess of Polignac. At that point, he was accorded the style of ''duc de Guiche'', since he was the heir presumptive to the Dukedom of Gramont. In 1801, he succeeded a cousin as the 8th Duke of Gramont and the Prince of Bidache. He served as a captain in the Royal ''Garde du Corps'' before fleeing to Britain at the outset of the French Revolution. He remained loyal to the House of Bourbon, becoming a military commander under Louis Antoine, Duke of Angoulême. Louis of Gramont (29 May 1689 – Battle of Fontenoy, 11 May 1745) was Duke of Gramont and a French general in the War of Austrian Succession. Antoine V de Gramont (January 1672 – September 16, 1725), Duke of Guiche, was a Marshal of France. Early life French military figure and member of the House of Gramont, he was the oldest child of Antoine Charles IV de Gramont and Marie Charlotte de Castelnau (1648 – 29 January 1694), daughter of Marshal Castelnau. Biography At the age of thirteen, he became a musketeer and by 1687 he had become head of his regiment. He participated in the Siege of Philippsburg (1688) and the Battle of Landen (1693). He was made brigadier in 1694 and served in Flanders. In 1696, he was serving under Marshal Catinat and Marshal Boufflers, and was himself made a marshal (of Flanders) and Colonel General of Dragoons in 1702.
