Dolgarrog is a village and community (Wales), community in Conwy County Borough, in Wales, situated between Llanrwst and Conwy, very close to the Conwy River. The village is well known for its industrial history since the 18th century and the Llyn Eigiau, Eigiau dam disaster, which occurred in 1925. The population was 414 at the 2001 Census, increasing to 446 at the 2011 Census. The community extends up to, and includes part of, Llyn Cowlyd in the Carneddau. The village is served by Dolgarrog railway station, a halt on the other side of the river Conwy, although the bridge allowing access to the station is slated for closure. Surf Snowdonia, the world's first commercial artificial surfing lake, is located in Dolgarrog on the site of the old aluminium factory. Across the valley is the crag of Cadair Ifan Goch. Dolgarrog Power Station
Dolgarrog power station in Dolgarrog, Wales was originally built in 1907 as part of an aluminium smelting plant. It uses water turbines to drive electricity alternators. Public supplies began in 1922 when power lines were constructed to transmit electricity from the power station to Colwyn Bay, Conwy and Llandudno. The station was vested in the British Electricity Authority and its successors following nationalisation in 1948. It is currently (2021) operated by RWE NPower UK. History Dolgarrog hydro-electric power station was commissioned in 1907 by the Aluminium Corporation of Dolgarrog to supply electricity to its aluminium smelting plant. The smelting of the mineral bauxite to make aluminium is an energy intensive process requiring a large amount of electricity. The availability of cheap hydro-electric power was therefore attractive. Llyn Cowlyd
Llyn Cowlyd is the deepest lake in northern Wales. It lies in the Snowdonia National Park at the upper end of Cwm Cowlyd on the south-eastern edge of the Carneddau range of mountains, at a height of above sea level. The lake is long and narrow, measuring nearly long and about a third of a mile (500 m) wide, and covers an area of . It has a mean depth of and at its deepest has given soundings of , this being some greater than its natural depth, the water surface having been raised twice by the building of dams. The surrounding hills drop steeply to the water's edge, from Cefn Cyfarwydd and Creigiau Gleision to the east, and Pen Llithrig y Wrach to the west, and as a consequence have not been forested in the 20th century, as were the slopes of neighbouring Llyn Crafnant. Dolgarrog Railway Station
Dolgarrog railway station is an unstaffed halt, and a request stop, on the Conwy Valley Line from Llandudno Junction to Blaenau Ffestiniog. The station is located on the east bank of the River Conwy just across the A470 road from Plas Maenan, which was the home of Henry Jack, the Managing Director of the Aluminium Corporation from 1916 to 1927, together with its associated enterprises including the Ffestiniog Railway and the Welsh Highland Railway. Plas Maenan is now a small country house hotel and restaurant with views across the valley. History The station was built by the LNWR in 1916 to provide sidings and an interchange facility with a short standard gauge industrial line, built by the Aluminium Corporation to serve Dolgarrog village and the aluminium works that are about a mile from the station on the west bank of the river. Adventure Parc Snowdonia, formerly Surf Snowdonia is an adventure park and tourist attraction, incorporating an artificial wave pool, at Dolgarrog in the picturesque Conwy valley, north Wales, owned by Conwy Adventure Leisure Ltd. Llyn Eigiau
Llyn Eigiau is a lake on the edge of the Carneddau range of mountains in Snowdonia, Conwy, Wales. The name ''Eigiau'' is thought to refer to the shoals of fish which once lived here. Early maps refer to it as ''Llynyga''. It is thought that a small number of Arctic char exist in the lake (as they do in neighbouring Llyn Cowlyd) after they were transferred here from Llyn Peris, and certainly it is one of the few lakes in Wales to have its own natural brown trout. The lake is surrounded by mountains including Pen Llithrig y Wrach. Dam In 1911 a dam ¾ mile long and high was built across part of its eastern side to supply water for the power station at Dolgarrog, which in turn provided power for the adjacent aluminium works.
