Doctor Who
''Doctor Who'' is a British science fiction television series broadcast by the BBC since 1963. The series depicts the adventures of a Time Lord called the Doctor, an extraterrestrial being who appears to be human. The Doctor explores the universe in a time-travelling space ship called the TARDIS. The TARDIS exterior appears as a blue British police box, which was a common sight in Britain in 1963 when the series first aired. With various companions, the Doctor combats foes, works to save civilisations, and helps people in need. Beginning with William Hartnell, thirteen actors have headlined the series as the Doctor; in 2017, Jodie Whittaker became the first woman to officially play the role on television. The transition from one actor to another is written into the plot of the series with the concept of regeneration into a new incarnation, a plot device in which a Time Lord "transforms" into a new body when the current one is too badly harmed to heal normally. Doctor Who Appreciation Society
The ''Doctor Who'' Appreciation Society (DWAS) is a society for fans of the television series '' Doctor Who''. It was founded in May 1976, emerging from the Westfield College ''Doctor Who'' Appreciation Society and the editors and readers of the fanzine ''Tardis''. The society produces a monthly print magazine, ''Celestial Toyroom'' (sent to the society's members), a quarterly digital magazine, ''Cosmic Masque'' (free to access via the DWAS website), hosts conventions, organises a network of local groups, and provides discounts to members for ''Doctor Who''-related merchandise for sale on the society's online shop. Since 2017 it has also published 'The Celestial Toyroom Annual' which is a compendium of items about a specific lead actor's contribution. The Curse Of Fenric
''The Curse of Fenric'' is the third serial of the 26th season of the British science-fiction television series ''Doctor Who'', which was first broadcast in four weekly parts on BBC1 from 25 October to 15 November 1989. In it, the ancient evil force Fenric uses the vampiric Haemovores, descendants of humanity from the future, to attack a World War II naval base in England and orders them to destroy life on Earth by poisoning it with chemicals. Mawdryn Undead
''Mawdryn Undead'' is the third serial of the 20th season of the British science fiction television series ''Doctor Who'', which was originally broadcast in four twice weekly parts on BBC1 from 1 to 9 February 1983. The serial is set in an English boarding school and a spaceship above the Earth in 1977 and 1983. In the serial, the scientist Mawdryn (David Collings), whose people on board the ship have been afflicted by a mutation that constantly causes their bodies to renew themselves, seeks to die using the regenerative abilities of the alien time traveller the Fifth Doctor (Peter Davison) to stop this process and allow them to die. Castrovalva (Doctor Who)
''Castrovalva'' is the first serial of the 19th season of the British science fiction television series ''Doctor Who'', which was first broadcast in four twice-weekly parts on BBC1 from 4 to 12 January 1982. It was the first full serial to feature Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor. The title is a reference to the lithograph '' Castrovalva'' by M. C. Escher, which depicts the town Castrovalva in the Abruzzo region, Italy. In the serial, the alien time traveller the Doctor is led into a trap when his arch-enemy the Master (Anthony Ainley) uses the mathematical abilities of the Doctor's travelling companion Adric (Matthew Waterhouse) to create Castrovalva, a town whose dimensions fold in on itself. This was the first Doctor Who story not to air on Saturday nights. Paddy Kingsland
Paddy Kingsland (born 30 January 1947) is a composer of electronic music best known for his incidental music for science fiction series on BBC radio and television whilst working at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. Educated at Eggar's Grammar School in Alton, Hampshire, he joined the BBC as a tape editor before moving on to become a studio manager for BBC Radio 1. In 1970 he joined the Radiophonic Workshop where he remained until 1981. His initial work was mostly signature tunes for BBC radio and TV programmes before going on to record incidental music for programmes including '' The Changes'', two versions of ''The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy'' (the second radio series and the TV adaptation), as well as several serials of ''Doctor Who''. His work on the latter series included incidental music for several serials in the early 1980s. Peter Howell (musician)
Peter Howell (born 1949) is a musician and composer. He is best known for his work on ''Doctor Who'' as a member of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. Howell's musical career began in the late 1960s working with John Ferdinando in various psychedelic folk bands including Agincourt and Ithaca. Howell and Ferdinando recorded five albums before Howell became a member of the Radiophonic Workshop, with which he would remain associated until 1997. ''Doctor Who'' His work on ''Doctor Who'' began in 1975 when he provided some accompanying incidental music for ''Revenge of the Cybermen'' and special sound for ''Planet of Evil''. Delia Derbyshire
Delia Ann Derbyshire (5 May 1937 – 3 July 2001) was an English musician and composer of electronic music. She carried out notable work with the BBC Radiophonic Workshop during the 1960s, including her electronic arrangement of the theme music to the British science-fiction television series '' Doctor Who''. She has been referred to as "the unsung heroine of British electronic music" with her Doctor Who theme having influenced musicians including Aphex Twin, the Chemical Brothers and Paul Hartnoll of Orbital. Doctor Who Theme Music
The ''Doctor Who'' theme music is a piece of music written by Australian composer Ron Grainer and realised by Delia Derbyshire at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. Created in 1963, it was one of the first electronic music signature tunes for television. It is used as the theme for the science fiction programme ''Doctor Who'', and has been adapted and covered many times. Although numerous arrangements of the theme have been used on television, the main melody has remained the same. The theme was originally written and arranged in the key of E minor. Most versions of the theme – including the current arrangement by Segun Akinola – have retained the use of the original key, with exceptions being Peter Howell ( F# minor) and Keff McCulloch's (A minor) arrangements. Keff McCulloch
Keff McCulloch is an English composer best known for his electronic music for ''Doctor Who'' in the late 1980s. In 1987, he was employed by producer John Nathan-Turner to arrange the ''Doctor Who'' theme music for the Seventh Doctor, Sylvester McCoy. The theme, drawing on the original composed by Ron Grainer and arranged by Delia Derbyshire, was used for three years until the series was cancelled by the BBC in 1989. The new theme music was accompanied by new titles and logo. McCulloch also contributed incidental music scores to six stories during the McCoy era, namely: ''Time and the Rani''; ''Paradise Towers''; ''Delta and the Bannermen''; '' Remembrance of the Daleks''; ''Silver Nemesis''; ''Battlefield''; and also the later ''Dimensions in Time'' and '' Shada''. The Doctor Who 25th Anniversary Album
''The Doctor Who 25th Anniversary Album'' is a 1988 compilation album of music from '' Doctor Who''. Mainly consisting of selections of Keff McCulloch's incidental music, it also included versions of the Doctor Who theme by Delia Derbyshire, Peter Howell, Dominic Glynn and McCulloch. It was subsequently reissued in 1997 as ''Evolution - The Music From Dr Who'' on Prestige Records. However, this issue was mastered at the wrong speed, the whole album playing much too fast. It was also reissued as ''Music from Doctor Who'' by Castle Pulse in July 2002. ''Dragonfire'' is the fourth and final serial of the 24th season of the British science fiction television series ''Doctor Who'', which was first broadcast in three weekly parts from 23 November to 7 December 1987. This serial marked the departure of Bonnie Langford as Mel Bush and the introduction of Sophie Aldred as companion Ace. In the serial, the criminal Kane (Edward Peel), exiled to the planet Svartos three thousand years ago, seeks to find the power source for his prison ship, which has since become a trading colony called Iceworld, so he can use it to return to his home planet.
