Dilbeek
Dilbeek () is a municipality in the province of Flemish Brabant, in the Flemish region of Belgium. The municipality comprises the villages of Dilbeek proper, Groot-Bijgaarden, Itterbeek (with Sint-Anna-Pede), Schepdaal (with Sint-Gertrudis-Pede), Sint-Martens-Bodegem, and Sint-Ulriks-Kapelle. Dilbeek is located just outside the Brussels-Capital Region, in the Pajottenland, hence the local name ''Poort van het Pajottenland'' (Gate to the Pajottenland). Even though Dilbeek is located in the Dutch language area of Belgium, there is a French-speaking minority represented by 3 members on the 35-seat local council. It is a mostly residential community with some preserved rural areas and some industrial zones. History Medieval origins The life of Saint Alena, the 7th-century martyr daughter of a lord of Dilbeek, was set in Dilbeek and Forest (Vorst). The historical facts of her life, however, are disputed. In Carolingian times, Dilbeek and its neighbouring villages were part of the pag ...

De Viron Castle
De Viron Castle ( nl, Kasteel de Viron, french: Château de Viron) is a castle in Dilbeek, Flemish Brabant, Belgium, which houses the offices of the local authority. History It was built in 1863 by the Jean-Pierre Cluysenaar, commissioned by the de Viron family, which settled in Dilbeek in 1775. The Tudor-style castle was built on the ruins of a 14th-century fortification which was destroyed in 1862. One of the medieval towers, the Sint-Alenatoren, can still be seen in the park surrounding the current building. It is named after Saint Alena, who lived in Dilbeek. On his visit to this fort, Charles V was reportedly served rabbit instead of his favourite hare, which resulted in the nickname konijnenfretters (rabbit eaters) for the inhabitants of Dilbeek. It became the town house of Dilbeek in 1923, and was protected as a monument in 1990. Architectury The castle counts 12 towers, 52 rooms, 365 windows and 7 staircases. Itterbeek
Itterbeek is a historical village in the province of Flemish Brabant, Belgium, and since 1977 a submunicipality of Dilbeek. Toponymy The village derives its name from the Indo-European words 'eud-' (water) en 'baki' (stream). One of the first mentions dates back to the 12th century, as ''Itrebecche''. In 1176 the village was mentioned as ''Itterbecca''. History Itterbeek used to be part of the allodium of Sint-Pieters-Leeuw. During the 9th century, it became subject to the chapter of Cologne. Itterbeek gained some importance in the 13th century when the area, despite the presence of vassals of the family van der Aa, came under the power of Gaasbeek and formed the so-called Nieuw Land van Gaasbeek together with Dilbeek and Sint-Martens-Bodegem. Judicial power was exercised by a bench of aldermen. Around 1244, Itterbeek became a separate parish, as part of the diocese of Cambrai. The oldest seal of Itterbeek, used in 1309, consists of a star and the words “S. Scabinorum de ...

Groot-Bijgaarden
Groot-Bijgaarden (officially) or Grand-Bigard is a village and deelgemeente in the municipality of Dilbeek, a suburb of Brussels, in Flanders, Belgium. Toponymy The name Bijgaarden is derived from the Germanic word for enclosure. The appellation "Great" (Groot) was attached to distinguish it from the smaller Klein-Bijgaarden nearby, now in the municipality of Sint-Pieters-Leeuw. History The earliest record of Groot-Bijgaarden is in the 12th century, when it appears as ''Bigardis''. This derives from the house of Bijgaarden. They made various contributions to the abbeys of Affligem and Groot-Bijgaarden. As a result of different marriages, the village came into the hands of the Veele Family, an important family from Brussels. After many donations, Groot-Bijgaarden was publicly sold to the counts of Königsegg-Erps in the second half of the 14th century. It is a former municipality in the province of Flemish Brabant, Belgium. Since 1977 it is a subdivision (deelgemeente) of the m ...

Sint-Gertrudis-Pede
Sint-Gertrudis-Pede is a village in Dilbeek. Toponymy According to local legend, Gertrude of Nivelles, abbess of Nivelles Abbey, was on her way to Lennik when her carriage became stuck in the mud. Therefore, she was obliged to continue her journey on foot. The name Pede would come from the Latin for "on foot". History Sint-Gertrudis-Pede grew around the place where different streams came together to form the Pedebeek, of which the largest is the Laarbeek. Around these streams were three large farms, who originally depended on the abbey of Nijvel, and later on Gaasbeek. The village never became an independent municipality, however this almost was the case. On 19 May 1893 the motion to create the municipality of Sint-Getrudis-Pede was accepted in the Chamber of Representatives, but was rejected by the Senate. In 1890 it became an independent parish, stretching over the borders of the municipalities of Schepdaal, Itterbeek, Sint-Martens-Lennik and Vlezenbeek. In 1977 it became pa ...

Sint-Martens-Bodegem
Sint-Martens-Bodegem (locally known as: ''Beugem'') is a historic village that is now part of Dilbeek. It has 2638 inhabitants. Toponymy For a long time it was assumed that the mention 'Bodenghem' in the founding charter of the abbey of Affligem applied to Bodegem, but this is nowadays contested because of a possible confusion with the village of Beugem, close to Moorsel. The fact that the nucleus of the settlement was founded very early on can however be linguistically proven (Bodegem < Bodingahaim). Another evidence is the division of the fields around Bodegem, which follows a system, indicating agricultural exploitation in post-Carolingian times.

History

Middle Ages

During the Middle Ages Bodegem had a dual manor. The manor with lower and middle jurisdiction, including feudal rights over almost all of Bodegem, was a ...

Flemish Brabant ( nl, Vlaams-Brabant ; french: Brabant flamand ) is a province of Flanders, one of the three regions of Belgium. It borders on (clockwise from the North) the Belgian provinces of Antwerp, Limburg, Liège, Walloon Brabant, Hainaut and East Flanders. Flemish Brabant also surrounds the Brussels-Capital Region. As of January 2019, Flemish Brabant has a population of 1,146,175. Flemish Brabant was created in 1995 by the splitting of the former province of Brabant into three parts: two new provinces, Flemish Brabant and Walloon Brabant; and the Brussels-Capital Region, which no longer belongs to any province. The split was made to accommodate the eventual division of Belgium in three regions (Flanders, Wallonia and the Brussels-Capital Region). The province is made up of two arrondissements.
