A levee ( or ), dike (American English), dyke (British English; see American and British English spelling differences#Miscellaneous spelling differences, spelling differences), embankment, floodbank, or stop bank is an elevated ridge, natural or artificial, alongside the river banks, banks of a river, often intended to flood control, protect against flooding of the area adjoining the river. It is usually soil, earthen and often runs parallel (geometry), parallel to the course of a river in its floodplain or along low-lying coastlines. Naturally occurring levees form on river floodplains following flooding. Jesse Six Dijkstra (born 23 September 1994) is a Dutch politician who was elected to the House of Representatives in the 2023 general election. He worked at the General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD) prior to entering politics. A member of the New Social Contract (NSC) party, his focus is on digital affairs and national security. Responding to a personnel shortage in prisons, he worked with Joost Sneller ( D66) and Derk Boswijk ( CDA) on a bill to allow courts to impose house arrest and electronic ankle monitoring as an alternative to short prison sentences. Wieke Elisabeth Henriëtte Dijkstra (born 19 June 1984) is a Dutch field hockey player, who plays as midfielder for Dutch club Laren. Dijkstra was born in Amsterdam, North Holland. In addition to her club career, she plays for the Netherlands national team, most of the time as a defender. She was part of the Dutch squad that became world champions at the 2006 Women's Hockey World Cup and which won the 2007 Champions Trophy. Sjoukje Dijkstra
Sjoukje Rosalinde Dijkstra (; 28 January 1942 – 2 May 2024) was a Dutch competitive figure skater. She was the 1964 Olympic champion in ladies' singles, the 1960 Olympic silver medalist, a three-time World champion (1962–1964), five-time European champion (1960–1964), and the six-time Dutch national champion (1959–1964). She was the first Dutch athlete to win a Winter Olympics gold medal. Personal life Sjoukje Rosalinde Dijkstra was born on 28 January 1942 in Akkrum, Netherlands. Sybrandus Johannes Andreas Dijkstra (born 20 October 1966) is a Dutch football coach and former professional footballer, who is goalkeeping coach at Fortuna Sittard. Peter Dijkstra (born 11 June 1978) is a Dutch conductor, especially of choirs and vocal ensembles. Born in Roden, Drenthe, Dijkstra sang in his youth in Jongenskoor Roder, a boys' choir, which his father, Bouwe Dijkstra, founded in 1985. He sang the Cantatas of J. S. Bach with the likes of Gustav Leonhardt, Sigiswald Kuijken and Max van Egmond in Amsterdam.
