Differdange
Differdange ( lb, Déifferdeng or (locally) ; german: Differdingen) is a commune with town status in south-western Luxembourg, west from the country's capital. It lies near the borders with Belgium and France and it is located in the canton of Esch-sur-Alzette. With a population of around 26,000, Differdange is the country's third largest city. It is also the main town of the commune, and other towns within the commune include Lasauvage, Niederkorn, Fousbann, and Oberkorn. Differdange is an industrial town that was home to much of Luxembourg's steel production, much of its development occurred during its heyday. Today, Differdange still remains an important industrial center, with ArcelorMittal, the world's largest steel producer, retaining the ARBED steel plant in the town. FC Differdange 03
Foussballclub Differdange 03 is a football club based in Differdange, Luxembourg. History Differdange 03 was formed in 2003 as an amalgam of two clubs from the city of Differdange: FA Red Boys Differdange and AS Differdange. When the clubs merged, in time for the 2003–04 season, Red Boys was languishing in the bottom half of the Division of Honour, while AS was in mid-table position in the third tier of Luxembourgian football. The new club took Red Boys league position, and was promoted back into the National Division in the 2005–06 season, when the top division was expanded from twelve clubs to fourteen. Red Boys Differdange had previously been one of the largest and most successful teams in Luxembourgian football, having won the Luxembourg Cup more times than any other team (15). Differdange Castle
Differdange Castle (french: Château de Differdange), located on a hill in the centre of Differdange in southern Luxembourg, was built in 1577 although an earlier fortified castle of Differdange dates from around 1310. Today's residential château is used by Miami University. History The first lord of Differdange Castle was Wilhelm, brother of the Lord of Soleuvre, who is mentioned in documents from 1310 when he owned a fortified castle. However, the lords of Differdange lasted only until the death of Wilhelm's grandson around the year 1400. Oberkorn (, fr: Obercorn de: Oberkorn ) is a town in the commune of Differdange in south-western Luxembourg. , the town had a population of 4,584. Etymology Both the towns of Oberkorn and Niederkorn get their names from the river D'Kuer (also called as Kar, Kor or Korn) in Luxembourgish or the Chiers in English and French or Korn in German. Miami University Dolibois European Center (sometimes called the Miami University John E. Dolibois European Center or simply MUDEC) is an overseas campus of Miami University based in Differdange, Luxembourg. Lasauvage
Lasauvage ( lb, Zowaasch) (German: — notionally only — Rohrbach) is a small town in the commune of Differdange, in south-western Luxembourg. Lasauvage was known as one of the few French-speaking towns in an otherwise Luxembourgish-speaking country. Unlike many German alternatives to place names in Luxembourg, Lasauvage's German equivalent, Rohrbach, has been little-used because of its perceived Nazi associations. Shortly before the Second World War, there were plans drawn up by the Luxembourg government for Grand Duchess Charlotte to reside in Lasauvage, given its proximity to France, which would enable her to escape over the border easily, but they did not come to fruition. There are twelve towns in Luxembourg, as defined by statute. Despite the status as towns, they are not all contiguous urban area, urbanised areas. They are similar to Communes of Luxembourg, communes, but have been given a separate legal status. There is a technical difference between the status of commune and towns, but this is limited in practicality. One difference is that ''Échevin (Luxembourg), échevins'' in towns are formally appointed by the Grand Duke of Luxembourg, Grand Duke, whereas ''échevins'' for other communes are appointed by the Minister for the Interior of Luxembourg, Minister for the Interior. Steel Industry In Luxembourg
In the industrial sector, the Luxembourg steel industry continues to occupy the first place in the country, even after the industrial reforms which have taken place since the 1960s. History Early development Iron was already worked and processed by the Celtic Luxembourg, Celts in the region of modern-day Luxembourg. Archeological remains of this have been found on the ''Gläicht'' between Esch-Alzette and Rumelange. In 2003-2005, the remains of a smelting plant from the 13th or 14th century were found and excavated in the ''Genoeserbusch'' near Peppange.
