Damaturu
Damaturu is a Local Government Area and the capital city of Yobe State in northern Nigeria. It is the headquarters of the Damaturu Emirate. History Damaturu came into existence as a colony when it was carved out of the Alagarno district by the British. It resulted in the conquest of the Bornu Empire in 1902 by colonial forces under the command of Colonel Thomas Morland. Boko Haram Damaturu has been attacked many times by Boko Haram jihadist insurgents in their violent campaign to establish a caliphate in the northeast. In November 2011, they killed over 100 people in a series of attacks. In December 2011, they carried out two bombings. In June 2012, 40 insurgents broke into a prison. 40 inmates escaped and eight people were killed. In June 2013, insurgents attacked a school and killed thirteen people, including students and teachers. Damaturu Prison Break
The Damaturu prison break was an attack on the Jimeta prison at Damaturu, the capital of Yobe State in the northeastern Nigeria by 40 gunmen suspected to be members of the terrorist group Boko Haram. The attack is thought to have been a bid to rescue imprisoned members of Boko Haram. About 40 prisoners escaped from the prison; seven inmates and one prison warden died. The escaped prisoners were largely members of the insurgent. Incident The incident occurred on the morning of Sunday, 4 June 2012. It was reported that the terrorist attacked the prison through the Emir's palace during curfew hours imposed by the Yobe state government. The entrance of the terrorists drew the attention of the armed prison guards and other security agencies within the prison, resulting in an exchange of gunfire between the Boko Haram and security personnel. Damaturu Emirate
The Damaturu Emirate is a List of Nigerian traditional states, Nigerian traditional state based in Damaturu, the capital of Yobe State, Nigeria. It is a first-class emirate. At one time the Damaturu Emirate was part of the Ngazaragamo emirate, which is based in Gaidam and extended as far as Chad to the east and Niger to the north. In November 2003 the Yobe State Governor, Bukar Ibrahim, approved the appointment of Baba Shehu Hashimi II Ibn Umar El-Kanemi as ''Shehu'' (Emir) of Damaturu. Hashimi II El-Kanemi was appointed Emir of Damaturu on 15 May 2004. He succeeded his brother Alhaji Bukar Ibn Elkanemi, who had died in Mecca the previous year. Hashimi Ibn El-Kanemi earned a Diploma in Accounting and Auditing in 1988 from Ramat Polytechnic, Maiduguri, and an advanced diploma from Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi in 2002. Yobe is a state located in northeastern Nigeria. A mainly agricultural state, it was created on 27 August 1991. Yobe State was carved out of Borno State. December 2011 Northern Nigeria Attacks
A series of attacks occurred during Christmas Day church services in northern Nigeria on 25 December 2011. There were bomb blasts and shootings at churches in Madalla, Jos, Gadaka, and Damaturu. A total of 41 people were reported dead. Boko Haram, a Muslim sect in Nigeria, later claimed responsibility for the attacks. Bombings Madalla At least 37 people died and 57 others were injured in an attack at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Madalla, a satellite town of Abuja located from the city center. A local coordinator with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed the death toll. 2011 Damaturu Attacks
The 2011 Damaturu attacks were a series of coordinated assaults in the northern Nigerian city on 4 November 2011 that killed more than 100 people and injured hundreds more. A spokesperson for the Sunni Muslim terrorist group Boko Haram later claimed responsibility and promised "more attacks are on the way." February 2015 Nigeria Bombings
In February 2015, suicide bombings occurred in the northern Nigerian cities Damaturu, Potiskum and Kano. On 15 February 2015, a teenage female suicide bomber detonated herself at 1pm at a crowded bus station in Damaturu, Yobe State, killing at least 16 people and wounding 30 others. It was Damaturu's first suicide bombing. On 22 February 2015, a child female suicide bomber killed five people in addition to herself and wounded dozens at a security checkpoint outside a market in Potiskum, Yobe State. On 24 February 2015, a suicide bomber detonated himself while trying to board a bus at Dan-Borno bus station in Potiskum, killing 17 people, injuring over 30 and destroying the bus. Boko Haram Insurgency
The Boko Haram insurgency began in July 2009, when the militant Islamist and jihadist rebel group Boko Haram started an armed rebellion against the government of Nigeria. A3 Highway (Nigeria)
The A3 highway is a highway in Nigeria. It runs generally north from Port Harcourt through Aba, Umuahia, Okigwe, Enugu, Ngwo, Makurdi, Lafia, Jos, Bauchi and Potiskum thence east via Damaturu and Maiduguri to the border with Cameroon at Gamboru.
