Côte D'Argent
Côte d’Argent (; ) is a name given to part of the Atlantic coast of the Aquitaine region in France. Etymology The term was first coined to describe the Aquitaine coast in 1905 by the journalist and poet Maurice Martin. The Congrès national des sociétés de géographie officially approved the name in 1907. The region it referred to eventually shrunk; the northern part including Royan became the Côte de Beauté and the southern part including Anglet became the Basque Coast. Geography In the south-west of France, facing the Atlantic Ocean, ''La Côte d’Argent'' is part of the Bay of Biscay. It is limited at its north by the Gironde mouth and at its south by the river Adour. Large waves make this a popular surfing destination and create some of the largest sand dunes in Europe, including the Dune of Pilat. Contis is a village, part of the commune in France, commune of Saint-Julien-en-Born, in the Landes (department), Landes ''département in France, département'' of Ordinal directions, southwest France, on the Atlantic Ocean, which has an extensive beach, ''Contis Plage''. Overview The wide beach of fine sand is popular with sunbathers, swimmers and surfers. A local landmark is Contis Lighthouse (''Contis Phare''). The lighthouse stands 38 metres high and has 192 steps. It is painted white with a spiralling dark stripe, like a ''Barley sugar, sucre d'orge''. It is the only lighthouse from Capbreton to Cap Ferret. Contis village also has shops and services fulfilling the needs of holidaymakers. The French television drama series ''La Dernière Vague'' was filmed around Contis, making use of the distinctive lighthouse. Mimizan
Mimizan (; oc, Mamisan) is a commune in the Landes department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine in south-western France. There are two separate districts of the town: Mimizan-Bourg (town center) and Mimizan-Plage (resort). Geography Mimizan is a seaside resort on the Atlantic Ocean in southwestern France. Mimizan Plage This resort was divided in two by the current: Mimizan North Beach where the majority of summer activities take place, the seasonal markets, the pedestrian street and Mimizan South Beach with cycling paths and walking trails make it an exceptional holiday location. The stretches of fine sand of the Mimizan Beach acquired the nickname the "Pearl of the Silver Coast" when the poet Maurice Martin made a stop with his caravan in 1905. Biscarrosse
Biscarrosse (; oc, Biscarròssa) is a commune in the Landes department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine in southwestern France. It is located southwest of Bordeaux, and inland from the seaside resort of Biscarrosse-Plage on the Atlantic coast. Near Biscarrosse is the CEL (national test centre) from which numerous French military rockets have been launched for test purposes. Likewise, the CEL has facilities for launching civilian rockets to study the upper atmosphere. Near the town centre, outside the ''Café de l'orme'', there was what is believed to have been the oldest elm tree in Europe. Planted in 1350, this Field Elm ''Ulmus minor'' died in 2010 after finally succumbing to Dutch elm disease. Legend has it that girls deemed promiscuous were forced to stand naked upon a barrel beneath the tree for a day. Arcachon
Arcachon ( ; ) is a commune in the southwestern French department of Gironde. It is a popular seaside resort on the Atlantic coast southwest of Bordeaux, in the Landes forest. It has a sandy beach and a mild climate said to be favourable for invalids suffering from pulmonary complaints. Arcachon is twinned with five cities. History On 2 May 1857, Emperor Napoleon III signed an imperial decree declaring that Arcachon was now an autonomous municipality; coincidentally, the railway line extension from Bordeaux to Arcachon had been completed that same year.
