Cylinder
A cylinder (from ) has traditionally been a three-dimensional solid, one of the most basic of curvilinear geometric shapes. In elementary geometry, it is considered a prism with a circle as its base. A cylinder may also be defined as an infinite curvilinear surface in various modern branches of geometry and topology. The shift in the basic meaning—solid versus surface (as in ball and sphere)—has created some ambiguity with terminology. The two concepts may be distinguished by referring to solid cylinders and cylindrical surfaces. In the literature the unadorned term cylinder could refer to either of these or to an even more specialized object, the ''right circular cylinder''. Types The definitions and results in this section are taken from the 1913 text ''Plane and Solid Geometry'' by George Wentworth and David Eugene Smith . A ' is a surface consisting of all the points on all the lines which are parallel to a given line and which pass through a fixed plane curve in a p ...

Cylinder (algebra)
In mathematics, specifically set theory, the Cartesian product of two sets ''A'' and ''B'', denoted ''A''×''B'', is the set of all ordered pairs where ''a'' is in ''A'' and ''b'' is in ''B''. In terms of set-builder notation, that is : A\times B = \. A table can be created by taking the Cartesian product of a set of rows and a set of columns. If the Cartesian product is taken, the cells of the table contain ordered pairs of the form . One can similarly define the Cartesian product of ''n'' sets, also known as an ''n''-fold Cartesian product, which can be represented by an ''n''-dimensional array, where each element is an ''n''-tuple. An ordered pair is a 2-tuple or couple. More generally still, one can define the Cartesian product of an indexed family of sets. The Cartesian product is named after René Descartes, whose formulation of analytic geometry gave rise to the concept, which is further generalized in terms of direct product. Examples A deck of cards An ill ...

Cylinder (disk Drive)
Cylinder-head-sector (CHS) is an early method for giving addresses to each physical block of data on a hard disk drive. It is a 3D-coordinate system made out of a vertical coordinate ''head'', a horizontal (or radial) coordinate ''cylinder'', and an angular coordinate ''sector''. Head selects a circular surface: a platter in the disk (and one of its two sides). Cylinder is a cylindrical intersection through the stack of platters in a disk, centered around the disk's spindle. Combined, cylinder and head intersect to a circular line, or more precisely: a circular strip of physical data blocks called ''track''. Sector finally selects which data block in this track is to be addressed, as the track is subdivided into several equally-sized portions, each of which is an arc of (360/n) degrees, where n is the number of sectors in the track. CHS addresses were exposed, instead of simple linear addresses (going from ''0'' to the ''total block count on disk - 1''), because early hard drives ...

Cylinder (engine)
In a reciprocating engine, the cylinder is the space in which a piston travels. The inner surface of the cylinder is formed from either a thin metallic liner (also called "sleeve") or a surface coating applied to the engine block. A piston is seated inside each cylinder by several metal piston rings, which also provide seals for compression and the lubricating oil. The piston rings do not actually touch the cylinder walls, instead they ride on a thin layer of lubricating oil. Steam engines The cylinder in a steam engine is made pressure-tight with end covers and a piston; a valve distributes the steam to the ends of the cylinder. Cylinders were cast in cast iron and later in steel. The cylinder casting can include other features such as valve ports and mounting feet. Internal combustion engines The cylinder is the space through which the piston travels, propelled to the energy generated from the combustion of the air/fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. In an ...

Cylinder (firearms)
In firearms, the cylinder is the cylindrical, rotating part of a revolver containing multiple chamber (firearms), chambers, each of which is capable of holding a single cartridge (firearms), cartridge. The cylinder rotates (revolves) around a central axis in the revolver's action (firearms), action to sequentially align each individual chamber with the gun barrel#Bore, barrel bore for repeated firing. Each time the gun is cocked, the cylinder indexing (motion), indexes by one chamber (for five-shooters, by 72Degree (angle), °, for six-shooters, by 60Degree (angle), °, for seven-shooters, by 51.43Degree (angle), °, for eight-shooters, by 45Degree (angle), °, for nine-shooters, by 40Degree (angle), °, and for ten-shooters, by 36Degree (angle), °). Serving the same function as a rotary magazine, the cylinder stores ammunitions within the revolver and allows it to repeating firearm, fire multiple times before needing to reload. Typically revolver cylinders are designed to gene ...

Cylinder (gastropod)
''Cylinder'' is a subgenus of sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the genus Conus, in the family Conidae, the cone snails and their allies. In the new classification of the family Conidae by Puillandre N., Duda T.F., Meyer C., Olivera B.M. & Bouchet P. (2015), ''Cylinder'' has become a subgenus of ''Conus'': ''Conus (Cylinder)'' Petuch & Sargent, 2012 represented as ''Conus'' Thiele, 1929. The same study found ''Cylinder'' to be polyphyletic, but morphologically consistent, possibly corresponding to grades. ''Conus ammiralis'', ''Conus canonicus'' and ''Conus dalli'' cluster with the type species ''Conus textile'', the others form a separate clade. Distinguishing characteristics The Tucker & Tenorio 2009 taxonomy distinguishes ''Cylinder'' from ''Conus'' in the following ways:Tucker J.K. & Tenorio M.J. (2009), Systematic Classification of Recent and Fossil Conoidean Gastropods, ConchBooks, Hankenheim, Germany, 295 pp. * Genus ''Conus'' Linnaeus, 1758 :: Shell characte ...

Cylinder (locomotive)
The cylinder is the power-producing element of the steam engine powering a steam locomotive. The cylinder is made pressure-tight with end covers and a piston; a valve distributes the steam to the ends of the cylinder. Cylinders were cast in iron and later made of steel. The cylinder casting includes other features such as (in the case of the early Rocket locomotive) valve ports and mounting feet. The last big American locomotives incorporated the cylinders as part of huge one-piece steel castings that were the main frame of the locomotive. Renewable wearing surfaces were needed inside the cylinders and provided by cast-iron bushings. The way the valve controlled the steam entering and leaving the cylinder was known as steam distribution and shown by the shape of the indicator diagram. What happened to the steam inside the cylinder was assessed separately from what happened in the boiler and how much friction the moving machinery had to cope with. This assessment was known as "e ...

Cylinder (optometry)
An eyeglass prescription is an order written by an eyewear prescriber, such as an optometrist, that specifies the value of all parameters the prescriber has deemed necessary to construct and/or dispense corrective lenses appropriate for a patient. If an eye examination indicates that corrective lenses are appropriate, the prescriber generally provides the patient with an eyewear prescription at the conclusion of the exam. The parameters specified on spectacle prescriptions vary, but typically include the patient's name, power of the lenses, any prism to be included, the pupillary distance, expiration date, and the prescriber's signature. The prescription is typically determined during a refraction, using a phoropter and asking the patient which of two lenses is better, or by automated refractor, or through the technique of retinoscopy. A dispensing optician will take a prescription written by an optometrist and order and/or assemble the frames and lenses to then be dispensed to ...

Cylinder, Iowa
Cylinder is a city in Palo Alto County, Iowa, United States. The population was 87 at the time of the 2020 census. History The town began in 1885 with the construction of a large hay barn, and soon after a railway siding was built to load the hay. In 1890 a railway depot was constructed, and the town was incorporated in 1900. The original railway depot was named after nearby Cylinder Creek, which may have received its name after early settlers dropped an engine into the mud and never recovered it. Professional wrestler Danny Havoc was born in Cylinder, and started wrestling in his family's barn with friends after school. Geography Cylinder is located at (43.089159, -94.550092). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , all land. Demographics 2010 census As of the census of 2010, there were 88 people, 39 households, and 22 families residing in the city. The population density was . There were 44 housing units at an average density of . ...

Cylinder Set
In mathematics, the cylinder sets form a basis of the product topology on a product of sets; they are also a generating family of the cylinder σ-algebra. General definition Given a collection S of sets, consider the Cartesian product X = \prod_ Y of all sets in the collection. The canonical projection corresponding to some Y\in S is the function p_ : X \to Y that maps every element of the product to its Y component. A cylinder set is a preimage of a canonical projection or finite intersection of such preimages. Explicitly, it is a set of the form, \bigcap_^n p_^ \left(A_i\right) = \left\ for any choice of n, finite sequence of sets Y_1,...Y_n\in S and subsets A_ \subseteq Y_i for 1 \leq i \leq n. Here x_Y\in Y denotes the Y component of x\in X. Then, when all sets in S are topological spaces, the product topology is generated by cylinder sets corresponding to the components' open sets. That is cylinders of the form \bigcap_^n p_^ \left(U_i\right) where for each i, U_i is ...

Cylinder Set Measure
In mathematics, cylinder set measure (or promeasure, or premeasure, or quasi-measure, or CSM) is a kind of prototype for a measure on an infinite-dimensional vector space. An example is the Gaussian cylinder set measure on Hilbert space. Cylinder set measures are in general not measures (and in particular need not be countably additive but only finitely additive), but can be used to define measures, such as classical Wiener measure on the set of continuous paths starting at the origin in Euclidean space. Definition Let E be a separable real topological vector space. Let \mathcal (E) denote the collection of all surjective continuous linear maps T : E \to F_T defined on E whose image is some finite-dimensional real vector space F_T: \mathcal (E) := \left\. A cylinder set measure on E is a collection of probability measures \left\. where \mu_T is a probability measure on F_T. These measures are required to satisfy the following consistency condition: if \pi_ : F_S \to F_T is a ...

Gas Cylinder
A gas cylinder is a pressure vessel for storage and containment of gases at above atmospheric pressure. High-pressure gas cylinders are also called ''bottles''. Inside the cylinder the stored contents may be in a state of compressed gas, vapor over liquid, supercritical fluid, or dissolved in a substrate material, depending on the physical characteristics of the contents. A typical gas cylinder design is elongated, standing upright on a flattened bottom end, with the valve and fitting at the top for connecting to the receiving apparatus. The term ''cylinder'' in this context is not to be confused with ''tank'', the latter being an open-top or vented container that stores liquids under gravity, though the term scuba tank is commonly used to refer to a cylinder used for breathing gas supply to an underwater breathing apparatus. Nomenclature In the United States, "bottled gas" typically refers to liquefied petroleum gas. "Bottled gas" is sometimes used in medical supply, espe ...
