Cycling At The 2020 Summer Olympics – Women's BMX Racing
The women's BMX racing competition at the 2020 Summer Olympics took place on 29 and 30 July 2021 at the Ariake Urban Sports Park. 24 cyclists from 17 nations competed in the event. Background This was the 4th appearance of the event, which has been held at every Summer Olympics since BMX racing was added to the programme in 2008. The reigning Olympic champion was Mariana Pajón of Colombia, who also won gold in 2012, and the reigning (2019) World Champion was Alise Willoughby of the United States. Willoughby suffered a crash and did not qualify for the final. A preview by Olympics.com noted the favourites as Pajón, Willoughby, Laura Smulders of the Netherlands (2018 World Champion), and Saya Sakakibara of Australia. Sakakibara also suffered a crash and did not qualify for the final. Qualification A National Olympic Committee (NOC) could enter up to three qualified cyclists in the BMX race. Ariake Urban Sports Park
is an outdoor sports facility located in the Ariake district of Kōtō, Tokyo and built for the 2020 Summer Olympics. The venue covers a total area of 97,000 m². The BMX, freestyle BMX and skateboard facility has a maximum capacity of 6,600, 5,000, and 7,000 spectators respectively. Judy Baauw (born 12 February 1994) is a Dutch BMX rider. Her best achievement to date was a bronze medal at the 2018 UCI BMX World Championships. Axelle Étienne (born 26 March 1998 in Bondy) is a French cyclist who competes in the BMX. Axelle was born in Bondy and grew up in Vaujours, in the department of Seine-Saint-Denis. Felicia Stancil (born May 18, 1995) is an American female BMX rider. Stancil has won 14 UCI World Titles including the 2012 UCI BMX World Championships titles for Junior Women and the Junior Women Time Trial in Birmingham, United Kingdom. A year later she successfully defended both titles at the 2013 UCI BMX World Championships in New Zealand.
