The women's road race was one of 18 cycling events of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The event was held on 7 August 2016 at Fort Copacabana and was won by Anna van der Breggen from the Netherlands. Qualification Course The women's course was long. Starting at Fort Copacabana, the peloton headed west to pass through Ipanema, Barra, and Reserva Maripendi Beaches via the coastal road leading to the Pontal / Grumari circuit loop. Fort Copacabana
Fort Copacabana ( pt, Forte de Copacabana, ) is a military base at the south end of the beach that defines the district of Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro. The base is open to the public and contains the ''Museu Histórico do Exército'' (Army Historical Museum) and a coastal defense fort that is the actual Fort Copacabana. History The fort is built on a headland that originally contained a small chapel holding a replica of the Virgen de Copacabana, the patron saint of Bolivia. In 1908 the Brazilian army started to build a modern coastal defense fort on the headland to protect both the beach of Copacabana and the entrance to the harbour of Rio de Janeiro. The fort, completed in 1914, consists of two armoured cupolas, one holding a pair of Krupp cannons, and the other a pair of Krupp cannons. Olena Kozakova Pavlukhina (born 1 March 1989) is a Ukrainian-born Azerbaijani road and track cyclist. Martina Ritter
Martina Ritter (born 23 September 1982) is an Austrian former racing cyclist. She competed in the 2013 UCI women's road race in Florence. She won the Austrian National Road Race Championships in 2015 and 2017 and she was six times national time trial champion. In October 2017 it was announced that Ritter would ride for in 2018. It was initially announced that Ritter had retired from competition at the end of that year, but she contested the 2019 Gracia–Orlová, finishing ninth overall for an Austrian national team. Amanda Spratt (born 17 September 1987) is an Australian road cyclist, who currently rides for UCI Women's WorldTeam . Spratt was selected to represent Australia at the 2012 London and 2016 Rio Olympics. In 2012, 2016 and 2020 she won the Australian National Road Race Championships in Buninyong, Victoria. Rachel Neylan (born 9 March 1982) is an Australian professional road cyclist, who rides for UCI Women's Continental Team Cofidis. She won a silver medal at the 2012 World Championships in the women's road race event. She won the inaugural women's Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race in January 2015. Katrin Garfoot (born 8 October 1981) is a German-born Australian former cyclist who won a bronze medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in the road time trial. She started cycle racing in 2011, three years after moving to Australia, having previously competed in athletics up to junior level. In addition to this, Katrin was a teacher at Southport State High School on the Gold Coast.
