Athens Olympic Velodrome
The Athens Olympic Velodrome is a velodrome stadium that is located in Marousi, Athens, Greece, at the Athens Olympic Sports Complex. The stadium, which seats 5,250 - though only 3,300 seats were made publicly available for the 2004 Summer Olympic Games - has distinctive twin roofs, covering the stands on each side. History The Olympic Velodrome was originally built in 1991 as an outdoor venue, for the Mediterranean Games. It was extensively refurbished in order to host the track cycling events at the 2004 Athens Summer Olympics. It was redesigned for the 2004 Olympics by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava who added a roof. The track, made of Afzelia wood, is long and wide. Lyn Lepore
Lynette "Lyn" Lepore, (born 9 October 1961) is a visually impaired Paralympic tandem cyclist from Perth, Western Australia. She competed at the 1996 Atlanta Games but did not win any medals at those games. At the 2000 Sydney Games, she won a gold medal in the Women's Tandem open event, for which she received a Medal of the Order of Australia, a silver medal in the Women's 1 km Time Trial Tandem open event and a bronze medal in the Women's Individual Pursuit Open event, with her pilot Lynette Nixon. In 2000, she received an Australian Sports Medal. Lepore appealed against Kieran Modra's placement in the Australian Paralympic cycling team at the 2004 Athens Games, in a case that was successful at the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Lindy Hou
Lindy Hou, OAM (born 18 February 1960) is an Australian tandem cyclist and triathlete from Hong Kong. Arriving in Australia with her family in 1974, she was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa in the mid-1980s and became legally blind in 1996. She has won six medals at the 2004 and 2008 Summer Paralympics. Personal Hou was born in Hong Kong on 2 March 1960. Her parents, who came from the southern provinces of China, moved to Hong Kong in 1960 and the family emigrated to Australia in 1974. In the mid-1980s, she was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, and she became legally blind in 1996. Before the deterioration of her eyesight, she was a competitive triathlete and triathlon coach, twice competing as an Australian Age Group Representative, and worked in the information technology industry. Cycling at the 2008 Summer Paralympics consisted of 44 events in two main disciplines, track cycling and road cycling. Track cycling was held in Laoshan Velodrome on 7–10 September, and road cycling took place at the Changping Triathlon Venue on 12–14 September. Classification Cyclists are given a classification depending on the type and extent of their disability. The classification system allows cyclists to compete against others with a similar level of function.
