Cycling At The 1987 Pan American Games
The cycling competition at the 1987 Pan American Games was held from August 7 to August 23, 1987 in Indianapolis, United States. There were a total number of seven men's and three women's events. The 1987 Games represented the first time women competed in cycling at the Pan American Games. Events were held at the Major Taylor Velodrome and at Brown County State Park. Inge Thompson-Benedict
Kristin Inga Thompson (born January 27, 1964) is a retired road bicycle racer. She competed at the 1984, 1988 and 1992 Olympics with the best result of eighth place in 1988. She won silver medals at the world championships in 1987, 1990 and 1991, and placed third at the Tour de France in 1986 and 1989. Nationally she won United States National Road Race Championships in 1987, 1988, 1990, 1991 and 1993. Inga Thompson was inducted into the US Bicycling Hall of Fame in 2014 She continues to be on many advocacy boards for Women in Sports. Activism In 2019 Thompson obtained the signatures of over 80 Olympians to advocate for categories separated by sex assigned at birth submitted to the IOC in hopes Women's Voices would be heard. She maintains that women's voices have been silenced. Kelly-Ann Way
Kelly-Ann Way (born September 18, 1964) is a Canadian retired track cyclist and road bicycle racer. Life and career Way was born in Windsor, Ontario, on September 18, 1964, and began cycling at the age of seven and in 1975 she joined the Windsor Bicycle Club. She became a member of the Canadian National Cycling Team in 1983. She studied at the University of Windsor between 1983 and 1987 and graduated with a Bachelor with Honours in Human Kinetics. In 1979 she won the Ontario provincial road championship at 15 years old and won her first national road race in 1980. She competed at the national track championships in 1982 where she won a silver medal in the individual points race and a bronze medal in the 3000m individual pursuit; in 1983 where she won a gold medal in the individual pursuit and a bronze medals in the 1000m time trial, the points race and the omnium event; and in 1991 where she won a gold medal in the omnium event. Rebecca Twigg
Rebecca Twigg (born March 26, 1963) is an American former racing cyclist. Cycling career An academic prodigy, she enrolled at the University of Washington in Seattle at the age of 14 and rode for the school's team. US national team coach Eddie Borysewicz saw her and invited her to join his team when she was 17. She earned degrees in biology and computer science from UW. Twigg won six world track cycling championships in the individual pursuit. She also won 16 US championships (the first – the individual time trial – when she was 18) and two Olympic medals, the silver medal in the 1984 road race in Los Angeles, and a bronze medal in the pursuit in Barcelona in 1992. Renee Duprel (1966) is a former American professional track cyclist. She competed at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships from 1989 to 1991, placing second in 1990, and she placed second in the Pan American Games in 1987. Connie Paraskevin-Young
Constance Anne Paraskevin, known as Connie (married name Paraskevin-Young; born July 4, 1961) is a retired American professional track cyclist and speed skater. She is a four times sprint world champion, ten times national sprint champion and an Olympic bronze medalist. Paraskevin began skating at the age of ten, she finished third at two 500m competitions at the world sprint speed skating championships in 1978 but did not medal. At the age of 19, she was a member of the US team at the 1980 Winter Olympics although she did not compete. Four years later she competed at the 1984 Winter Olympics. Paraskevin campaigned to have the women's sprint event included in the 1988 Summer Olympics before going on to win a bronze medal in the event in Seoul.
