The women's individual road race was the first time that a women's cycling event had been included in the Olympic program. The race took place on Sunday July 29, 1984 along the major roads within Mission Viejo, California. There were 45 participants in the race, from 16 nations, with one cyclist who did not finish. Marianne Berglund (born 23 June 1963) is a Swedish former road racing cyclist. On 3 September 1983 she won the women's road race during the UCI Road World Championships in Altenrhein, Switzerland. Inga Thompson
Kristin Inga Thompson (born January 27, 1964) is a retired road bicycle racer. She competed at the 1984, 1988 and 1992 Olympics with the best result of eighth place in 1988. She won silver medals at the world championships in 1987, 1990 and 1991, and placed third at the Tour de France in 1986 and 1989. Nationally she won United States National Road Race Championships in 1987, 1988, 1990, 1991 and 1993.
