Cycling At The 2004 Summer Olympics – Men's Madison
The men's Madison in cycling at the 2004 Summer Olympics was contested by 18 teams, 36 cyclists. The Madison race consisted of 200 laps of the track, or 50 kilometres. It was a two-person team event, with a tag-team format used to allow one cyclist to rest while his teammate raced. Medalists Results The Australian team of Stuart O'Grady and Graeme Brown rode consistently to achieve points in seven of the 10 sprints for a total of 22 points and the gold medal. The Swiss team of Franco Marvulli and Bruno Risi finished strongly winning the last three sprints for 15 points and the silver medal. Cycling at the 2004 Summer Olympics consisted of 18 events in three disciplines: *Road cycling, held at the Athens historic centre (start and finish at Kotzia Square, for the road race events) and in Vouliagmeni Olympic Centre (for the time trial events). *Track cycling, held at the Olympic Velodrome. * Mountain biking, held at the Parnitha Olympic Mountain Bike Venue. In total, 464 cyclists participated: these consisted of 334 men and 130 women, from 61 countries. The youngest participant was Ignatas Konovalovas, at 18 years, while the oldest was Jeannie Longo, at 45 years. The most successful contestant was Bradley Wiggins, who won three medals: one gold, one silver and one bronze. Matthew Gilmore (born 11 September 1972 in Ghent) is a Belgian-Australian retired track cyclist, who mostly competed and was most successful on track for Belgium. Milton Ariel Wynants Vázquez (born March 29, 1972 in Paysandú) is a racing cyclist from Uruguay, who was affiliated with the Veloz Club Sanducero. Walter Fernando Pérez (born 31 January 1975 in San Justo) is an Olympic gold medal-winning racing cyclist from Argentina. Pérez, who joined the Argentine cycling team in 1992, won the Cycling World Championships in 2004 and Men's Madison gold medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics with teammate Juan Curuchet. Juan Esteban Curuchet (born 4 February 1965 in Mar del Plata) is a road bicycle racer and track cyclist from Argentina. Curuchet represented Argentina at the Summer Olympics in 1984, 1988, 1996, 2000, 2004, and 2008. He won the madison at the 1999 Pan American Games with his older brother, Gabriel Ovidio Curuchet. Hayden Roulston (born 10 January 1981, in Ashburton) is a former New Zealand professional racing cyclist. He won the silver medal in the men's 4000 m individual pursuit and a bronze medal in the men's 4000 m team pursuit at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
