Crusaders F.C. (London)
Crusaders Football Club was an English association football club based in London. It was a founder member of the Football Association. History Before the Football Association The club was founded in 1859 as a footballing club restricted to old boys from Westminster School and Eton College. The club duly played matches before the foundation of Association rules; the earliest recorded match against an external side being against Charterhouse School in January 1863, on the Under Green at Charterhouse, which the Crusaders won 1-0. The Charterhouse side missed out on a goal because the pegs that were to tighten the "cord" - the equivalent of tape in the (later) Association game, joining the tops of the posts together - had loosened, so the cord was not taut and a shot went over the cord; the tight cord was a feature of the Charterhouse rules alone. The Oval, currently known for sponsorship reasons as the Kia Oval, is an international cricket ground in Kennington, located in the borough of Lambeth, in south London. The Oval has been the home ground of Surrey County Cricket Club since it was opened in 1845. It was the first ground in England to host international Test cricket in September 1880. The final Test match of the English season is traditionally played there. In addition to cricket, The Oval has hosted a number of other historically significant sporting events. Arthur Kinnaird, 11th Lord Kinnaird
Arthur Fitzgerald Kinnaird, 11th Lord Kinnaird (16 February 1847 – 30 January 1923) was a British principal of The Football Association and a leading footballer, considered by some journalists as the first football star. He played in nine FA Cup Finals, a record that stands to this day. His record of five wins in the competition stood until 2010, when it was broken by Ashley Cole. Kinnaird also served as president of The FA for 33 years. For his contributions to football and the FA Cup, he was given the FA Cup trophy itself to keep in 1911 when a new trophy was commissioned. Life Kinnaird's father, Arthur Kinnaird, 10th Lord Kinnaird, was a banker and MP before taking up his seat in the House of Lords. Kinnaird's mother was Mary Jane Kinnaird and he was born in London. Giulio Cowley Tyler Smith (2 May 1849 – 22 July 1909) (also known as J. C. Smith and Giulio Tyler-Smith) was an amateur athlete who played for England in the first unofficial football match against Scotland in March 1870. Early life and education Smith was born in Piccadilly, London, on 2 May 1849, the son of Dr William Tyler Smith (1815–1873) who was an eminent obstetrician and his wife, Tryphena Yearsley. Smith attended Westminster School between 1863 and 1868 and represented the school at football in 1866–67 and 1867–68. He also won the school 100 yards and mile races. The Football Association Challenge Cup, more commonly known as the FA Cup, is an annual knockout football competition in men's domestic English football. First played during the 1871–72 season, it is the oldest national football competition in the world. It is organised by and named after The Football Association (The FA). Edgar Lubbock
Edgar Lubbock LLB (22 February 1847 – 9 September 1907) was an English amateur footballer who twice won the FA Cup and played first-class cricket. He later became a partner in the Whitbread Brewery, a Director and Deputy Governor of the Bank of England and the Master of the Blankney Foxhounds. Early life and education Lubbock was born in London, the tenth of eleven children of Sir John Lubbock (1803–1865), the former head of the Lubbock & Co Bank, and Harriet Hotham. He was educated at Eton College where he became a member of the football XI between 1864 and 1866, and captain in his final year. He was also part of the mixed Wall team between 1863 and 1865. Between 1870 and 1872, the Football Association (FA) organised five representative association football matches between teams representing England and Scotland, all held in London. The first of these matches was held at The Oval on 5 March 1870, and the fifth was on 21 February 1872.The Scotsman Newspaper Monday 27 February 1871 page 7 The matches, which were organised by Charles W. Alcock, are the precursors to modern international football and were referred to as internationals at the time.
