"Cruisin'" is a 1979 single written, produced, and recorded by Smokey Robinson for Motown Records' Tamla label. One of Robinson's most successful singles outside of his work with The Miracles, "Cruisin'" hit number one on the U.S. '' Cash Box'' Top 100 and was also a major '' Billboard'' Pop hit, peaking at number four the week of February 2, 1980. It was a Top Five hit on the Soul chart as well. Background The song was co-written by fellow Miracle Marv Tarplin. The song was released in 1979 under Pacific Arts (PAC 108) from the album ''Infinite Rider on the Big Dogma''. The B-side of the single was "Carioca". "Cruisin'" tells the story of three individuals who live on the streets of Los Angeles, California and are related by their lifestyle. Vincent Eugene Craddock (February 11, 1935 – October 12, 1971), known as Gene Vincent, was an American musician who pioneered the styles of rockabilly and rock and roll. His 1956 top ten hit with his backing band the Blue Caps, " Be-Bop-a-Lula", is considered a significant early example of rockabilly. His chart career was brief, especially in his home country of the US, where he notched three top 40 hits in 1956 and '57, and never charted in the top 100 again. In the UK, he was a somewhat bigger star, racking up eight top 40 hits from 1956 to 1961. Vincent was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Rockabilly Hall of Fame. Cruisin' Classics was a series of oldies music compilations released onto audiocassette from 1989-1990 by Shell Oil. About the series The idea of the tape albums as described in a 1990 edition of ''The Stanford Daily'', was to tailor them to a different cruising era. The covers of the cassette albums would feature a certain car from that era. A Chevy Bel-Air was on the cover of ''Volume VI'' album which featured the classics, "Blue Moon" by The Marcels, Runaround Sue by Dion, Yakety Yak by The Coasters and "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On" by The Killer. The cover of ''Volume IV'' featured a Ford Mustang. The songs on the album were "Mr. Tambourine Man by The Byrds, " Chain Of Fools" by "Aretha Franklin" and "Monday Monday" by The Mamas and the Papas.
