Cross-country Skiing At The 1976 Winter Olympics – Men's 50 Kilometre
The men's 50 kilometre cross-country skiing competition at the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria, was held on Saturday 14 February at Seefeld. Gerhard Grimmer of East Germany was the 1974 World champion and Pål Tyldum of Norway was the defending champion from the 1972 Olympics in Sapporo, Japan. Each skier started at half a minute intervals, skiing the entire 50 kilometre course. Of the 59 athletes who started the race, 15 did not finish. Ivar Formo of Norway took his first and only Olympic gold medal. Seefeld In Tirol
Seefeld in Tirol is an old farming village, now a major tourist resort, in Innsbruck-Land District in the Austrian state of Tyrol (state), Tyrol with a local population of 3,312 (as of 1 January 2013). The village is located about northwest of Innsbruck on a plateau between the Wetterstein mountains and the Karwendel on a historic road from Mittenwald to Innsbruck that has been important since the Middle Ages. It was first mentioned in 1022 and since the 14th century has been a pilgrimage church, pilgrimage site, benefiting not only from the visit of numerous pilgrims but also from its stacking rights as a trading station between Augsburg and the Republic of Venice, Venice. Tommy Limby (5 September 1947, Gåxsjö, Jämtland – 14 January 2008) was a Swedish cross-country skier who competed in the 1970s. He earned a gold medal in the 4 × 10 km relay at the 1978 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti. In 1974 he participated in the Orsa IF men's team winning the Swedish national relay championship. Sergey Savelyev (skier)
Sergey Petrovich Savelyev (russian: Серге́й Петро́вич Саве́льев; February 26, 1948 in Raychikhinsk, Amur Oblast – October 29, 2005 in Moscow) was a Russian cross-country skiing (sport), cross-country skier who represented the Soviet Union. Savelyev trained at the Armed Forces (sports society), Armed Forces sports society in Moscow. He won two medals at the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck with a gold in the 30 km and a bronze in the 4 × 10 km relay. Savelyev also won the 30 km event at the 1978 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti. Savelyev was awarded Order of the Badge of Honor (1976). Sven-Åke Lundbäck
Sven-Åke Lundbäck (born 26 January 1948) is a former Swedish cross-country skier. He competed at the 1972, 1976 and 1980 Olympics in the 15 km, 30 km and 4 × 10 km events and won a gold medal over 15 km in 1972. He was close to a bronze medal in the 4 × 10 km relay in 1972, but fell near the finish; he had another fourth place in the relay in 1980. Lundbäck won the 50 km and 4 × 10 km events at the 1978 World Championships, the 50 km race at the 1976 Holmenkollen ski festival, and the 90 km Vasaloppet in 1981. After his 1981 win, one of the Vasaloppet hills was named after Lundbäck. Domestically he collected 10 Swedish individual titles, clean-sweeping the 15, 30 and 50 km gold medals in 1976 and 1978. William Conrad Koch (born June 7, 1955) is an American cross-country skier who competed at the international level. A native of Guilford, Vermont, he is a graduate of the nearby Putney School in Putney. In 1974, he became the first American to win a medal in international competition, placing third in the European junior championships. Biography Koch was born in Brattleboro, Vermont, to Fred and Nancy Koch. His father lived on investments from a major corporation. His parents divorced, and, in 1965, when his mother became remarried to the then president of Marlboro College, Koch lived with the new family. At the age of 12, Koch met noted cross-country skier Bob Gray, who taught him how to train effectively. When the family moved to England, Koch attended Aiglon College, a boarding school in Switzerland, for a year. Vasily Pavlovich Rochev (russian: Васи́лий Па́влович Рочев) (born 22 December 1951 in the village of Bakur, Izhemsky District, Komi ASSR) is a former Soviet/Russian cross-country skier who competed in the 1970s and early 1980s, training at Dynamo in Syktyvkar. He won two medals for the Soviet Union at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York, with a gold in the 4 × 10 km relay and a silver in the 30 km.
